Volunteers plant natural garden at Princeton library - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

Volunteers plant natural garden at Princeton library - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL
I love this idea and is located right along Rte 6 on Princeton's East Side.

LaSalle did First Street downtown with the help of Boy and Girl Scouts, great idea.

Peru did Rte 6 with the help of volunteers and I wonder who will water them this year, remembering that Ald. Perez came out all summer to do watering on his own time.

Peru city employees are supposed to be watering the hanging baskets and planters, but it doesn't look like they are watering much because I looked at the planters and they are very dry. They need watering at least every third day if it doesn't rain, and they need a good soaking not just a few sprinkles.

I saw Perez watering them last week, don't know if the city employees are assigned to do that.

Volunteerism is great and is beneficial to those volunteering and to the community as a whole.
What Peru is lacking is the support and encouragment of its elected officials for worthy projects. In short, it'a all about leaders and leadership. Someone in addition to Rodney Perez needs to have some initiative to organize and bring folks into the fold.
The problem with Peru's elected officials is they lack the drive and work ethic to take on projects other than showing up and casting a vote or sitting in on another "Closed Session" of secret business. If we had elected officials more concerned about improving and leading our city, and less concerned about keeping more people from running for office we would be in much better shape. We still need quality, not quantity folks.

I'm hearing some solid names being tossed around in third and fourth wards for challengers in next election. Perez will run in 2nd but what about first ward, wish we could find someone in that ward also.

Election season is not far off....

In yesterday's paper there was an article and a picture taken at our firehouse. Who pays for all this food for fireman? Why? This isn't a large city where numerous calls back to back come where fireman are performing their job for many hours at a time. Nor do we have a full time fire department where many fireman are maned at the station. Don' out volunteer fireman get paid $32 dollars or more a fire call even if the call is 15 minutes? . I noticed all the cases of soda also. Could someone explain this? Does out tax dollars pay for this or does donations to Liberty Fire pay? It do the fireman put money into a jar to pay for this? This article caught my eye because of the questions that have been asked regarding what Liberty does with the donation money from taxpayers. What is concerning to me is that I heard that no money from Liberty was put towards purchasing the fire truck or other vehicles purchased. I don't want to come across as being a complainer. But just curious. This article needs it's own title on this blog. My job doesn't feed me. Does yours?

Anon 9:10 Who are you calling?

Anonymous said...

(:20 I dont know. I am a complainer about the city, but I go a lot easier on the police and fire when it comes to food and soda, and smaller perks. Even the way they use the cars.

They have a very different job. Its not the same as yours or mine. Whether they are full time or part time, they really do have a much greater chance of harm or death on our behalf than anyone, every time they suit up.

Do I give them a free pass for drinking or lavish parties on tax payer dollars? No. But small minds focus on small problems, like bottled water or pop. I get angry at no bid contracts and hundreds of thousands of dollars in waste. We can get around to cutting the bone if and when we ever even acknowledge the fat.

9:20 Why not contact the fire chief to answer the questions you pose here? Pick up the phone and call. He would have the answers. It is quite possible that the food was bought and brought by the firemen themselves. It is possible there is a soda machine that they have to put their own money into to get a soda.

I guess the other option would be for you to contact the FBI.

I've heard that the fireman pictured drove a firetruck home for lunch. What is the MPG for a firetruck? Maybe he should call a cab and pay for it out of his own pocket? No, my job does not feed me and very few blue collar occupations do.
Go to work for the government, these jobs are better than those working at a true professional level. If teaching is considered professional it is the only profession which remains stagnant of all government occupations. They are long overdue for more pay and better benefits. I said teachers not administrators.

Appears that the fire department has quite a group of compulsive soda drinkers?

Anon 12:22 When speaking of a police or fire job's dangers are you comparing Peru to NY,NY. or Chi., Il. You must realize that most Peru Police have retired without ever drawing a weapon and most firemen have never been over 2 stories high. Quite a difference in the big cities.

Do we really need to buy water for the city council? I think they can bring their own, they all can afford a bottle of water.

Anonymous said...

3:19 - You Betcha they need to buy water. With all the hot air blowing around the council chambers.

1:27 I know of whom I was speaking. Big city beats are not all that different. You dont have to be on the Swat team or bomb squad to still face risk. I cant make you see any reason. If you hate all things Peru and want the firefighters to buy their own pop so much that it warrants a full discussion, I doubt we would ever agree on much. Police and fire are often defined as 7 hours and fifty five minutes of sheer boredom followed by 5 minutes of sheer terror. Many people focus on the downtime. I respect the risk. I would buy them all a pop, whether I liked em or not. Even Bernabei and he can be a **** ****. But it does not mean I dont respect the badge.

Anon 6:10 WOW!Sadly you are a role model and result of brain washing. Before this goes on any further and does any more mental damage please discontinue taking showers with a large towel covering your head and face.

I think they should put an ice cold glass of Peru Tap Water with ice made from Peru Tap Water in front of each member of the Council at the next meeting and see if they drink it.

To 5:32 am, Now that's funny. I agree completely. It's funny because the aldermen fall all over themselves singing the praises of TEST and the fabulous work they do for our city. I recall Sappy getting all emotional on the evening the NO-BID contract was given away as our city council "sold their soles" to TEST, Inc. Peru water has an awful quality and is terribly over-chlorinated. But hey, TEST puts out a nice dinner spread a few times a year so the aldermen and mayor can strap on the old Feed-Bag and knock down complimentary food and beverages. Don't forget that they also provide campaign dollars and support to the mayor and I suspect some aldermen as well. The Peru city council should be required to drink Peru tap water. After all, because of the NO-BID sweet-heart deal with TEST, Inc, we taxpayers are paying quite a premium for that sub-standard "potable" water. The least the aldermen could do is pretend to drink it.

Anon 5:32 Why drink X brand when the taxpayer buys all that excellent bottled water? Who knows maybe there will be a number of bottles for the picken to take home. Political fringe benefits are only limited by what a politician doesn't take.

5:32 Reminds me of the Erin Bracovich movie.

Now it's the water at the meetings??? Convenience! CONVENIENCE!!!! No one has to spend time washing glasses, making ice, putting the ice in glasses, filling the glasses, or heaven forbid, maybe spilling some water. It takes seconds to put a bottle of water at each seat for the meeting. It isn't about TEST or the taste of the water. It's about the ease of preparing for a meeting.

6:49 I dont understand your post. The other poster just agreed to disagree, but you want towels in showers? It really is posts like yours that give the blog both entertainment value and lack of credibility.

Anonymous said...

1:51 PM, it's called perception. If it is perceived as being wrong it is wrong. Just like TEST buying dinner or drinks after the meeting - it just looks bad.

Anonymous said...

1:51 how about the alderman all bring their own bottled water? Pretty easy and convenient.

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:18 Speaking of lack of credibility where did you learn to read. 6:49 does not mention a single word about wanting towels in showers.
You had best reread 6:49's comment and than reread your own. Now who is lacking the mental ability to understand what is stated word for word.
By the way do you understand the term waterboarding? No not skateboarding dummy, waterboarding!

Oh please, with so many major issues and expenses you are worried about bottled water or sodas at the fire dept? Most every fire dept fridge has a ready supply of water, soda or gatorade to hydrate firemen during and after fires. Not sure about Peru but some fire depts have monthly meetings and training sessions. A bottle of water or soda is a very small price to pay for giving up personal family time to be properly trained to save your butt if needed. Yes this fire dept rarely gets involved in death defying structure fires like New York, but battling fires against the elements are the same everywhere.

Forget the petty water , did you ever read the dispersement sheets ? We buy more safety glasses and ear muffs from Smith's in one week than we have employees in the entire city . Then the next week they buy just as many and so on. And these glasses aren't the cheap ones they are like $12 each . They must throw them away at the end of the day !

What about all the gloves and ladders we've purchased and keep purchasing from Debo's?

Anonymous said...

Severence package for retiring employees . Where do you think all the trimmers , blowers , and mowers went ? We didn't sell them . certain employees just take them home .

Safety glasses, ear muffs, ladders, shovels, gloves can all be obtained with a extensive history of all purchases, person purchasing and amount purchased thru a vending machine located in the work station. Many city governments are utilizing this program offered by Fastenal. To see more look up www.Fastenal.com. Fastenal has a branch in the north end of Peru.
Approximately 2 years ago a citizen of Peru offered $200 or $250 for the best money saving idea. How many ideas were submitted? Appears that money saving ideas are not important in Peru, especially when $200 to $250 barely buys your average lawn mower.
