Grand Army of the Republic Figure at Rotary Park

I have heard complaints for years about how poorly many of our parks are maintained, particularly neighborhood parks.  Certainly would like to think that volunteers for the city could make a difference.  The planters and baskets were a beginning and those that I have seen mostly along RTE 6 on the east side of town, are really starting to look good and I think some of the merchants are doing their share of helping with them.

These are a few pictures of the soldier of the Grand Army of the Republic located in what was formerly City Park and is now called Rotary Park. Bushes are overgrown and really need to be replaced or at least for the time being trimmed way down so you can at the very least read the wording on the impressive figure located at the south side of the park. The city must be short a weed whipper or 2 considering the lack of care around poles.

If you are interested in helping to volunteer to work around the statue, contact Ald. Perez of the public property committee.

Volunteers for the Beautification of Peru has recently teamed up with Peru Rotary to beautify Rotary Park.
There's no doubt this is a beautiful and memorable park.
Rotary Park is known to me as Central Park. I grew up 3 blocks from this park and spent my childhood there.

There's plenty of weeding to do at this park before we start planting and laying mulch next week. I encourage anyone with spare time who'd like to lend a hand to just step up to help weed the park. Weeds can be piled to the side and we'll go through to bag them.

After we finish Rotary Park over the next couple weeks, we will appoint teams to manage certain sections of the park. Until then... We all work together to get it cleaned up.

Thank You!
Rodney

The NewsTribune won a award for the investigative news story on the Township. Has there been any progress in eliminating those salaries?

Just a reminder to all, Saturday June 15, 10A.M.-3P.M. Friends for Peru Pool are holding their annual Fun Fair at Centennial Park. This is a group of volunteers who have worked extremely hard for a swimming pool to be built in Peru and are deserving of a huge helping hand in their efforts.
If you are looking for a enjoyable day tomorrow Centennial Park will be the place. A good time is guarenteed.
Also if you know or see one of the volunteers be sure to thank them as they have volunteered their time for a great and worthy cause for Peru.

How many police cars are assigned to each area of Peru and how many officers are assigned to each area? Is there a possibility of reducing the number of cars and putting some of the officers on bikes during the summer to save on the cost of gas and increase efficiency?

Work began today on Rotary Veterans Park this evening with a handful of willing volunteers pulling weeds throughout the park, several yard bags full of them. Loosening soil around the flowers and a few trees has begun. I'm positive we are doing work that the summer help will not be directed to do and all this union chatter is very disturbing to many o the residents. SPW is always complaining he does not have enough help and everyone at city hall should be thankful that people are willing to pitch in and help in doing something worthwhile that needs doing.

The SPW would not have enough help if he had a payroll line from Peru to Chicago. He has expressed a negative attitude and been reluctant to accept additional work projects since being appointed to the position. Rather than reevaluating the appointment this administration has accepted it and has not shown progress.

My only comment with regards to these parks and the condition they are in is "it didn't happen overnight." In other words, in my opinion these parks and flower beds have not been properly maintained for some time. A prime example are the 2 flower beds on the corners of Shooting Park and Pulaski. They have turned into jungles because of neglect.

As I have watched this administration, I have come to the conclusion that the mayor prefers to have department heads who never challenge him and will do little out of the ordinary routine. If he asks them to do something and they don't, he does nothing. Any excuse will work. I can't help but think of Frank Taylor and the Witczak property. Nothing has changed, Witczak is in violation and nothing has changed because Taylor does not feel like pursuing the problem. And the mayor does nothing. That in total is how this administration does not work but simply meanders along.

The feeling we receive from the 9:37 comment is a vindicative approach to a former elected officials property. Much has been done to cleanup the area as a result of Mr.Taylor, Mr.Witczak. What exact oridinances are in current violation? This is old news the property is cleaned up! Stick to the weeds in the park, summer help. Maybe you could put together a resume for your SPW qualifications?

If you are speaking for the city and this event is now setting precedence for any future violations by any individuals in the future, you may be setting the city up for a lawsuit.

Anon 10:14 why suggest for anyone to put together a resume for SPW quaalifications when everyone has known for over a year that the city has already decided upon replacing the SPW position with a City Engineer upon Blecks retirement. The City Engineer is presently a engineer provided to the city by Chamlain Consultants and his first initial is M.P.
One sure way of not shaking up any skeltons is to keep the council room locked shut.

Anon 11:23 The City of Peru City Council has had a never ending line of closed sessions. Is there a time frame in which these closed sessions must be made public knowledge? What would be the reason that Peru has to have so many closed sessions?

Anonymous said...

The closed sessions must be reviewed every six months, with the city attorney advising whether or not to release the minutes.

For some reason we're either not resolving the issues discussed in closed session or they just don't want the general public to know what's going on in their city (which by the way is in violation of the OMA).

There are exceptions to the open meetings act and they have to be reviewed every six months. The governing body has to determine if they remain open or closed. Issues such as personnel matters are generally not released for public viewing, and they should not be most of the time. It does not mean there is a conspiracy. They are actually doing this the right way assuming they are talking about the things they say they do in closed session.
