Illinois EPA - Information Statement on the Removal of Lead-Based Paint

Illinois EPA - Information Statement on the Removal of Lead-Based Paint

The city of Peru is not new to the field of demolition of old structures and we have never heard of a problem with lead based paint or LBP for short.  For example we are currently in the process of demolition of the old power plant on Water Street, and the Westclox debris sits in the elements and the Peru Pool and yet the only time I have heard mention of paint is the pool, yet all those buildings plus one taken down on 7th and Buffalo were old and I have no doubt that everyone of them had LBP in their structure or debris. Why is the pool singled out for concern for LBP? What don't I know? What do I need to know?

The bottom and sides of that pool had to have been painted numerous times since it was built. Lois are you talking about that paint or paint elsewhere on the property?

Fireworks are expected tomorrow as both democrats and republicans hold caucuses on Peru. Democrats who hold 7 of the 8 positions are expected to nominate same people who just gave themselves a 4% pay raise even after NewsTribune coverage unless someone challenges them they will continue boys country club at township and the republicans are expected to battle it out with vickrey and several others.

THEY ARE PAID TOO MUCH AS IT IS.
WHY DO THEY NEED A 4% RAISE. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO EARN IT???? ITS TIME TO GET THE INCUBENTS OUT. START OUT FRESH. I HOPE VICKERY DOESN'T GET IN, I THOUGHT WE SAW THE LAST OF HIM, IN NOVEMBER.

The township incumbents should have voted themselves a 90% pay decrease, not a 4% pay increase. I am serious. Doug Biderstedt holds the only position of expertise on the whole township board. The pay that the trustees receive for a half hours work per month and their voting which has boasted the balance of the township positions to where they are at is not only a crime it is sinful. $40,000/year Peru Twp. Supervisor-part time occupation. Peru Twp Clerk $23,000/year part time position that visits the office 2 to 3 times a month. Peru Twp Road Commissioner $50,000 to $60,000/year to take care of 5 to 6 miles of road plus gets a assistant. Four trustees who vote these wages in, incidentally they are paid $257.00/meeting which lasts approximately 1/2 hour. There are people on the Peru Township as trustees who think Ike is still president.

Peru is at a standstill. This lead paint issue is just one more example of how the city council has done more harm than good since Harl has been Mayor. He came into office wanting to hire a outside sources for city engineer and SPW but the council blocked this and choose to pay niney thousand plus yearly and a new extravagant vechile to a long term city street employee and title hin Superintendent of Public Works. Peru is very much in need of a City Manager and a City Engineer.

Lead paint is rarely that big an issue. It generally can be scraped or blasted , with minimal hazardous waste collected. The remaining rubble usually can pass leachate tests and be used as fill, or if not I think it can be safely blasted without air exposure and the wash disposed of properly.
This isn't radon, mercury, asbestos or underground storage tanks. I do not understand why it would be a hold up, unless the lead has leached into the soil from the pool leaks over the year. I do not understand why someone from the city wont just post the answers or send them to Lois to post, and stop the speculation here.
There are stories about environmental issues all around in surrounding towns,, but when it comes to Peru, there never seems to be any in depth reporting and explanations. I don't understand why. It is not the city's fault if there are environmental issues, but people do expect an up front and easily understood explanation.

Thank you for your well thought out post.None of us seems to understand why everything this city does has to be done behind closed doors and why explanations are not given.
I just had a conversation with a friend and in discussing the attempt to demolish the power plant and how the events seem to be clouded in secrecy. Why isn't someone designated to give information out and squelch all the too often "what ifs" or "did you know". People drive by that building day after day and deserve to know what it going on at that site and at others throughout the city.
If this is the age of information, it certainly hasn't happened here in Peru yet.
