There Will Be A Stop Sign at Pine & 14th Street

The aldermen voted 7-1 to replace the Yield Sign at 14th and Pine with a stop sign not because it was needed because as I have been hearing from so many for so long, it is who you know when you live in Peru and I would like to add that "money speaks" This is located in the First ward, second precinct.

I am willing to bet that half of the aldermen who voted yes would not know where that intersection is and because one of their own asked, it was granted. Politics as usual in Peru.

I still cannot understand the need and reason for this change. It's not a well traveled road, it dead ends to the right, and it's a T intersection with a YIELD sign already posted. The only thing I can perceive as the reason for this change is that some influential people live in that vicinity.

Was there a survey taken at that intersection that determined it was dangerous? I can't imagine that to be true (and I doubt a survey was taken) but other than someone with influence requesting the sign change I see no reason for it. There are many more dangerous intersections where stop signs would be advantageous.

I was taught that by my father when I was very young. It still holds true today. Its not what you know its who you know and whos behind you kiss.

Mentioned last week, voted on last night, stop sign in place today. Somebody sure has a lot of clout.

You can say that again 6:59!

I asked Rodney why he voted No on the stop sign. He told me he didn't feel a case was made to have one there. Rodney laughed and said if that intersection was justified the City of Peru better stock up on signs because every resident feels their corner needs stop signs and speed bumps.

9:27 And Rodney is once again right on. The big problem is that there are corners where stop signs are really needed. Much more so that this particular T intersection. I wonder how many aldermen actually visited this corner before they voted "YES". I know for a fact some had no idea where it was. Ridiculous!

Which councilman brought this wasted purchase to the agenda?

lst ward alderman M. Radke

Because of the controversy on this stop sign and intersection i was curious to know where it was. I had to double check the signs and location because the first thing I thought to myself was,"it can not be this intersection" but sure enough it was.My husband asked for a stop sign 6 years ago and was told by Alderman Jack Obierne that the city decided my block didn't need one. Im thinking now we were not important enough of residents or because our last name isnt popular that we were not approved.

I'm sure the city would not release the name of who requested that sign but I now have a feeling it would have power behind that name.

What was Ald. M. Radke's reasoning in having a stop sign placed in this location? The public is not only deserving of a answer from him he is also deserving of being given his opportunity to give a answer to the general public.

It would be interesting to hear the reasoning of the other six aldermen as to why they voted in favor of a stop sign at this location.

Is this a high traffic area or a area which is very high risk.
If a sign is needed would a yield sign be sufficient.

Has there been any studies of this location before the request was granted?

If M.Radke or any other alderman voted to add one or more stop signs maybe they should start studying the safety factor of having the wrong people placed in charge of responsibilities in Peru which put all citizens in unsafe conditions ie SPW, Bldg. Insp., electrical foreman in charge of demolition of building on water street. Has the Building Inspector issued a date by which this building is to be demolished?
Are city officials going to allow this unsafe structure to be on exhibit for another 4th of July holiday and how about the eye sore on Fourth Street? The old bank appears to be the the site of the next WWF Cage Match? It is about time to set priorities and achieve them. The city is allowing a unsafe act by the FDIC in enabling them to put up a fence with stands on the bottom which get covered by snow and people have to walk on the highway to get past the Amcore building.
With a Director of Economic Development in place for at least two years what has been accomplished to make downtown Peru appealing to potential business'?

There was a yield sign at this location which was removed and a stop sign was put in place the next day!

I suggest we all get out and monitor our neighborhood for possible locations for a safety sign. Any kind will do, stop sign yield sign, no parking to corner, don't park in front of driveway, no parking, no outlet. The key word is SAFETY

And we will then see how many are approved by this council.

I suggest if you're out and about town check this intersection out and then determine if you think a stop sign was necessary. If not, contact your alderman and ask them why they voted to replace the yield with a stop and if they even checked the intersection out before voting. Make them accountable.

I checked that intersection out. Personally I didn't think there needed to be a stop sign put there. I thought the yield sign was sufficient. However, I voted yes because I believe those residents who asked for it must feel it is necessary. As I said at the council meeting, I requested a stop sign at 7th and Rock because 7th Street from Monks to West Street becomes a speedway after LP lets out, but I was denied. I thought I had a valid request, (since my son was hit by a car walking home after school) but the aldermen at that time did not think it was necessary. I don't want to do to another resident, what those former (and some current) aldermen did to me years ago. I can only hope that for future requests we do some research into how busy the intersection is, how many accidents have happened there, etc. before the vote comes to the council.

Good luck trying to get a logical answer to your questions on "Why"this intersection got a sign put up. I do believe the current council is slipping and growing arrogant. I'm sure Alderman Radtke reads this blog but I'm sure you will not see him or others respond to our questions. This is pure Arrogance! We all know the stop sign went up because the alderman asked for it to go up! end of story.
I know why voting at the polls go down every election, it's because people are tired of the let downs of broken campaign promises.

Thank you Sherry.

Maybe in the future those who request a stop sign should come before the safety committee to present their request or the full council which now meets in formal session each week. And even though you checked it out, not everyone on the council did and I know that as fact.
When all this comes fully out, I believe it will be determined that it was one family who does NOT live at the intersection at all that made the request. . I travel this route on my way to the grocery or one of the drug stores in that area and traffic is virtually non existent Maybe I should start driving on 15th street which is going to be resurfaced (not sure why)
and I won't have to stop and start so often, it is an option.

I too thank you for responding alderwoman Mayszak. What upsets me the most on this issue is that a request was sent to alderman Radke and acted upon immmediately. No survey, no report, no reason why other than a citizen requested that sign change.
And, I guarantee you that many of these alderman did not even know where this intersection was and they didn't even question the request.

Alderwoman Mayszak.

Thanks for coming on and giving us an explanation. I'm also sorry to hear about your experience. but I wouldn't think because a councilmember here's from another that a citizen requested something like this that it is okay. You said yourself in your opinion that intersection didn't need one. now, even if you didn't feel one was needed but heard from Alderman M.Radke of a similar story or close to it as yours, I could see why then you would Vote " YES " But it sounds to me that you would have voted "NO" This is a case of one resident wanting this because wanted to make other neighbors mad. There should have been research, such as talking with neighbors or sitting and monitoring that intersection off and on as I did. I know exactly who wanted that sign there and it was clearly not for safety being top concern. I'm sorry Alderwoman Mayszak but I don't think you should have voted from your personal emotions when this is a community of more than one person. How can the city say no to any other requests like this when they can now use this intersection as an example. I don't mean to pick on the alderwoman but we need strong voices that are going to represent everyone on decisions like this. Living two blocks away and I have never seen a crash or pedestrian hit there. That should have been the first clue that it was not a safety concern but a " Control" thing. Come on Peru Council WAKE UP and RESEARCH, or abstain from voting due to lack of information. To many YES people on this board of leaders.

Eventually there will be a stop sign on every corner in town...just give it time. Since I live near 13th and Calhoun I see the same drivers blowing off the stop sign and turning Calhoun into a speedway. Switching gears: there is one thing I don't want to see and that is traffic control lights at Peoria and Shooting Park Road. Only three periods of the day are there numerous vehicles at the intersection at the same time. I use it and it's orderly. But with stop lights cars will be sitting and wasting gas for a green light when there is no other traffic. And with $4 dollar gas on the horizon it will sting all the more.

An "Old" News Trib co-worker said...

I SO agree with Cecil!!! Take a look at Rt. 251 & Shooting Park when the lights are not working and go to flashing red. The traffic moves through far better and faster than when they are "working properly". A four way stop at Shooting Park & Peoria works just fine.

Who's brilliant idea was it to add the stop sign at the 11th and Calhoun southbound lane ? This intersection is at an incline and you must stop going up hill and try to restart if you are heading southbound . The last snow we had i made the mistake and went that way and almost slid backwards into the car behind me trying to restart after my stop while on the incline . Obviously noone looked into this before that stop sign was just added . Typical incompetant council . Just go with the flow and try to make those important people happy .

Hopefully, Radtke is a one term mistake of our best judgment. He has made it very clear that he does not have the majority of the citizens of his ward or the city in his best interest. Very selfish. We all know why that sign is there. One little house party can buy you many favors now can't it Mike? Hmm. Would that fall under the description of a bride? Need to come down a few notches Mike. If they are blogging about you this bad within such a short time, I can't imagine what will be said come next election time. Takes a clear head to sit in that chair and your campaign promises just went blank.

@6:45 Could you please tell us who had the party? Or at least give us a hint!

After checking the Peru ordinances on stop signs, it seems that the Police Chief must agree with the alderman so that means that Chief Bernabei agreed with Ald. Radtke to install the stop sign.

But this is not the first time I have disagreed with Police Chief Bernabei.
