News Tribune - News - Local - Peru pool fundraising to kick up a notch after grant denied

Anonymous said... Good morning Lois, just read in the News Trib that the Peru Pool Committee is going to apply for a 501(3)c, Non Profit Corporation. Please make this a heading, so the citizens can comment on this move. I for one, would like to see the money that has been raised put towards a splash pads in one of the parks for the kids by the start of next summer. No need to start a corporation to do that.

I question a not for profit headed by a city employee. We already have one not for profit called PVAS and we know that they do NOT have to share records with the city and don't. Do we need more of the same.
How are the people that donated to a pool going to feel about using the money for other purposes?

Does this mean another organization or group of people who can do with the money as they see fit and basically answer only to each other?

If I read the article in the paper right the pool organization money will not be used strictly for water recreation. I thought that was it's purpose.

Eakas

7:00 What do you mean by just stating Eakas under this topic? We know Eakas donated $20,000 to the swimming pool fund but what are you trying to tell us?

I agree with Lois, a splash pad for children by next summer is the way to go.

Would like to clarify a few things for any that believe there is a conspiracy taking place.

There are no city employees that are on the executive board of friends for Peru Pool. Heidi at one time was the chair but stepped down from that position and Pam Paden took it over two months ago.

"Anyone" is welcome to join the core of volunteers and always welcome to see the financials.

The pool funds will always remain for the pool and will not be used for anything other than the pool.

I am a volunteer of the committee and will not speak on behalf of the chairperson (Pam Paden)but like any other "community" non for profit organization they can fund raise for multiple needs or wants. Some donors may have already donated to the pool and may want to donate to an ice skating rink, etc. or perhaps a donor doesn't feel a pool is needed and would rather contribute to a rink, and not a pool.

It would be nice for an organization to be formed to be able to do things like that for a community. Friends for Peru Pool is re-structuring and plans to change the name and fundraise for the community.
This organization would always be open with public meetings and financials.

Step up and Volunteer your time. Things get done when people unite and work as a team.
Only You can make a difference!

Thank you,
Rodney Perez

Is Rodney Perez on the executive board of friends for Peru Pool? If he is not what committee is he a volunteer of?

ANON 8:03 from my understanding of Rods post he is on Friends of Peru Pools committee as a volunteer but not on their executive board.I would imagine a board consists of a President or Chair, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
then the volunteers that do the grunt work.
That's Just my read on it.

Just came from a council meeting and heard that the recreation commission was talking to several architects who were donating their services to help design a cheaper pool for the city. One of the architects was associated with EAKAS. That must by why that huge facsimile $20,000 check is propped up in front of the aldermanic section of the chambers. Are we going to see EAKAS POOL constructed in Peru?.

A few members of the "Friends For Peru Pool" committee were talking with an architect, not members of the recreation commission. The Eakas architect is only associated with Eakas because he designed their addition. He is not an employee of Eakas. He graciously offered to give us a new, less expensive design free of charge, and he said he has done many pools. As far as naming the pool after Eakas, no, but we are very, very happy to have received that $20,000 and that fascimile check is a wonderful reminder of that very generous donation. We may end up naming something in the pool after Eakas for their support of the citizens of Peru. If somebody wants to donate about $1.5 million, I would vote to name the pool after them without hesitation.

Sad to say the issue of a swimming pool is becoming the Tease of Peru. There is more than enough time before sufficient funds can be raised by the Friends of Peru Pool to have a vote in a upcoming election to see if the majority want a pool. Remember that the average age of the citizenship is 43 years of age and 50% of the citizens are 53 or older. Swimming pools are outdated, continuously being shut down by government bodies and maintenance and chemicals are very expensive to keep them open. The maintenance and chemicals will have to be paid by the taxpayers as a pool will not operate at a profit. Also they are only open for a average of 70 days a year. Just a suggestion but wouldn't a replica of the "High Society Youth Center" be a interesting subject to see if there would be any interest by our local youth. It was sure a winner fifty years ago. Just asking!
A splash pad for the younger group and a youth center for the grade school on some nights and for the high school on other nights.

Anon 11:40 Thank you for a idea which will keep all age groups happy with fiscal responsibility. Some how I keep thinking of the movie Tora, Tora, Tora whenever I hear of Eakas making a donation to the "Friends for Peru Pool" of $20,000 after Peru just raised it sales tax to 7.5% to accumulate $7,000,000 for infrastructure and it utilizes more than $1,000,000 of the $7,000,000 for Eakas' expansion. When you think of it Eakas donated our own money back to the "Friends for Peru Pool".
Does this mean Peru will need $8,000,000 + not $7,000,000 and is there a 5 year sunset as first promised?

Sherry, I was just thinking about the long and expensive process that Peru went through with Williams Aquatics who had the expertise to not only evaluate our old pool, present many options to us regarding pool design and the capabilities to put a new one together. Having an architect design one is only one aspect of the pool and then you need to find a company that will accept your design and agree to build it with their engineers and I am not sure how many companies that build aquatic centers would be willing to do that. Have you discussed that also?

Will $91,000.00 be enough to demolish Veterans Pool as well as to start thinking of building a new pool. As for the naming of the pool lets let that up to the time when it is built. Maybe it will qualify under a shovel ready program. There's a good name for the pool "Shovel Ready".

$50,000 was budgeted last year for the demolishing of the pool.

A budget is supposed to be a good guideline or close estimate. As was stated above will $91,000 be enough to demolish Veterans Pool? Does the $50,000 include hauling away of waste? Who is to perform the demolition, city employees or a contractor? What do you expect to get for $50,000 because that huge hole is going to have to be filled with something and pardon the expression BS will only take you so far.
