Why Are We Spending Almost 11,000 on the City Parking Lots

It is on the agenda for Monday night to award UC 10,855 to  to seal and stripe the city parking lots:
Opposite Debos, From Peoria to Fulton between 4th and 5th street and the parking behind the City Hall. Today I drove through all the above mentioned lots and see that all are in good condition with adequate striping. Then I went around the block and back up Fulton and find that 4th St. Fulton corner to be in deplorable condition. What is the point of having "perfect" parking lots and deplorable rutted broken down roads. Would that amount of money that is going to the lots at least make the Fulton St. corner better than it is now. Any prospective business would wonder what kind of priorities the city of Peru has.

I agree this is foolish but maybe it might be a safety issue.
But it looks like the Mayor and the supt. of Public Works is requesting a vote by the city council. (after all they cannot decide on anything to run the city they need to blame someone. therefore the next election the Mayor will say ,"it is not me it is the city council" what a shame.)

Why can't the Mayor just say NO like he did on the council approval votes to open the swimming pool this year?

That is leadership. It is not the Aldermen, but given the opportunity the Aldermen will make a decision for which they have been elected.

It is called maintenance. By doing preventive sealing the asphalt has a longer life. If you seal it you must re-stripe.

8:58 a.m. - I'll say one thing for sure about you. You are persistent in your little campaign of "mis-direction".
That's it! You will from now on be officially known as....."Ms. Direction".
10:07 a.m. is correct. You seal to prevent water from penetrating deep into the asphalt in order to minimize the effects of the freeze/thaw cycle which is what causes the cracking and separating of the asphalt surface.
Why do you think people seal their driveways?
Ms. Direction - You picked the wrong side of yet another issue.

I wonder if there was a preventative maintenance program established by our previous administration. If so, I wonder when these parking lots were last sealed and if it is indeed time to do it again. They didn't seem that bad to me. The roads leading to them are definitely much worse. While I agree that a lot of these things are a necessay evil because of our financial situation I think we need to pick and choose the most important right now. I don't know if a agree that these parking lots are that important today.

I understand the need for some type of maintenance but many of us are wondering why this year when we are so stretched for money. And in addition to that we may be lucky if our cars last long enough to park in the city lots. And of the lots of which there are many and since we have so few local businesses on Fourth Street for which these lots were undoubtedly intended, who is using them. Sunday the lot was full of cars and most businesses were closed. I often question why we have 5 parking lots in town, including municipal parking. Would the city sell someone a lot in the parking lot to open a tax producing business?
Recently had this discussion with a friend and we had no answers.

how much would this cost with city employees to do the work? Could they do it all for less than $11K? Just a thought-thanks.

Why spend the money to seal and stripe?

I never see route 80 sealed ?

Ask "looking rearview mirror" (wrong way) Steve !

Of course this was approved tonight. Right after the treasurer told them they need to make deep cuts in the budget. Only 11,000 on this project :(. We are at least keeping the contractors in business.

3:51 - Now who can argue with that logic?

You are right Lois, keeping the contractors with work supports Mayor Harl union buddies.

I have a blacktop walkway, I use frequently across the 7th street fill. It is in terrible condition with cracks and bumps and very uneven. Can I blame a lack of a sealant for the problem? Do you suppose that I and all the people that use it could get something done. We don't need striping just better walking. In fact as we walk further west there are places where there are no sidewalks on both sides and one would have to zig zag from one side to the other so we go into the street and many times cars are traveling by in both directions.
Lots of people walk here, school kids, dog walkers, runners, and ordinary people. We need someone to be concerned about our safety. We seem to be concerned about bike riders and now what about all the walkers.

Lois, 10:41 PM Can you remember how long sidewalks on 7th street has been that way ? Maybe all of your life ? Why complain about it today ? Maybe Mayor Harl has his priorities wrong!, should it be sidewalks or sewers ? What will get him re-elected ? Ask Him ?

I was simply trying to make a point about priorities, it was not that I don't understand they "why" of the job but simply that perhaps the priorities and timing.
On Monday one alderman brought up the subject that "doesn't Debo Hardware own some of that lot and shouldn't they be helping" A hush fell over the council with no reply that felt like they were telling him to shut up. Do other individuals own some of the property we are paying to have coated?. I will find out but it will involve a trip out of town when I can.
