This is from the News Trib and a detailed description of the money spent by the city in attempts to keep the swimming pool operating. Also I noted how closely Chamlin was associated with work done or sent out for bids and I also remember just a couple of weeks ago he said and a quote "we don't do swimming pools".
Do you see something different?

This was the second such article by the news tribune in recent months. The first was about two months ago should have been titled "blame the old guy, that's why we don't have any money". This one should have been "blame the old guy the pool is broke". News flash we have an 80 year old pool and it needs maintenance. The problem is there is no one stepping up to the plate to fix the pool.
I have a plan-fix the existing pool so it conforms to whatever standard needed so it can last 10 years. That may cost a million. During the 10 years start real planning, construction and financial, so in ten years we have the money saved and a plan to begin construction.
I don't think you will find anyone that will fix the existing pool and guarantee it for 10 years. If you know someone, call you alderman with your advice.

We DON'T HAVE THE MONEY to do ANYTHING ELSE.
La Salle's pool was larger and also approx 80yrs old and yet it was repaired and reopened.
Give me postive thinking and anything is possible.
Why were all questions addressed to Chamlin in the first place? I thought Mr. Drennan was our pool expert then and now.

I believe that the LaSalle pool was opened in 1941 and the Peru Pool was built in 1927.
Additionally the Peru Pool was never closed for any major repairs through an entire season like LaSalle was.
Now the pool can have its major repairs, just like the LaSalle pool. Now is not the time to ask the tax payers to fund a brand new pool. MY GOODNESS
What about the voids in the bottom of the pool?
When you take the existing bowl out you fix the base. C'mon people use your heads. MY GOODNESS
For those saying repair it then build a new one a few years down the road, that is crazy!!! Would you put $100,000 repair into your house and then 5 years later tear it down and rebuild for $300,000? NOOO! Sometimes it is better to bite the bullet now, it will pay off in the long run. If they did repair it now and then go to build another one 5 yrs. from now, could you imagine these same people's response?????
Question for anyone advocating spending large amounts of money on a municipal pool.
How much of your personal money are you willing to give to the City of Peru?
Please be specific. How much?
Second question: How do you want to pay that sum of money?
Raise Water rates?
Raise Electric rates?
Raise real estate taxes?
Raise sales tax rates?
If the Council has an average of what each household will pay extra right now for repair or new construction, they will have some idea of what direction to take.
Help the coucil gather some facts from the taxpayers and respond with your contribution amount.
Note: This question should be asked by the Council because without raising new revenue, the pool will never open again!!!

If we do a major ovrhaul on the pool at least we will have one for 10 years or more. If this goes to a referendum there will be know way in hell it will pass. Then we wont have a pool at all for at least five years or more. Lets get the pool renovated and use the next ten years to SAVE for a new pool. MY GOODNESS
Where are you people getting the idea that the pool can be renovated and last 10 or more years? It is my understanding that no one will guarantee any renovations to our pool unless we rip it out and start over (which would be very costly).

What would you consider a major overhaul on the current pool?
Until you have read the results of the engineering consultation by Williams, it would be hard for anyone to understand the dept of the "problems" and how much would have to be done with the structures. And
NO GUARANTEE unless the entire pool is replaced and that would mean down to an empty hole in the ground.

I'm typing this on my phone so please excuse the mistakes...
My question to everybody: Is anybodies property or life/physical well being endangered by not having a municipal pool?
We, as citizens, must set realistic expectatios of what our government spends money on. Peru is currently diverting funds from our electric department to make payroll. How much maintenance is being deferred to support this policy? What happens if the sustation supplying WalMart goes down and we can't restore power? A couple million dollars worth of food could be destroyed. What happens when we need a new police car or fire truck? Has the drainage on Church/13th been fully resolved?
State and Federal grants are going to be more and more difficult to get moving forward. And remember... grants are not free money
To All, Looks like there is a clear picture here for the city pool; repair or forget it .
I agree with all of the voices against a new pool for the city of Peru.
I also agree with a pay as you go theory and want to have a fund raising with private and public money but no increases of taxes or any kind of rate increases.
Lets look at this city today; A dozen of reasons against.
1. How many people own property and qualify for the circut breaker reduction on taxes ?
2. How many people own property and are on a fixed income?
3. How many people are unemployed in the city of Peru?
4. How many people are on food stamps ?
5. How many people are renters in the city and don't care for an increase in taxes but will vote yes for a pool ?
6. How many people are single families without children?
7. How many families have children that will use a city pool each day June,July,Aug.
8. How long would a tax increase last , forever iven after the pool would be paid for ????? Permanent tax increase
9. How many people do you think would vote in favor of doing a brand new pool ?
10. After the new pool issue is voted DOWN what is the fate for a pool for peru?
11. How many people have recently filed for bankruptcy?
12. How many people in town have had their property foreclosed?
Where are the plus's for a pool for the city of peru ? ANYONE ?
In my view, correct the above 12 reasons then the city pool might be possible! MONEY? MONEY?
Right on ANON 5:05 To ANON 2:30 I have read the results from Williams and for some reason option 1 and option 2 were thrown out. Hmmmm wonder why? Do you think possibly Williams would rather build a new pool than rehab an existing one. You would think that Williams report is the bible to these people. Remember we hired them, not that I would have, THEY WORK FOR US! WE CAN AND SHOULD FIRE THEM! LETS RENOVATE AND SAVE BIGTIME MONEY. MY GOODNESS
They were thrown out because there was NO guarantee for even 1 year.
And it is foolish to say we should fire them. I asked today and they will not be returning unless requested to. Their job is finished and we will pay them 15,000 for what they have done. We are on our own again to do whatever the Council and Mayor decide to do.
It does sound like there will not be a referendum on the pool this November perhaps in the April election. The aldermen were not able to come to a clear cut decision on what to do. They do know money is not available and cannot count on grant money either. Our city atty took the time to remind the council that they had more pressing obligations on the table at the current time and considering the economy at present, it was not a good time to be taking on more debt.
Streator Pool has been closed since 2003, for now a total of 7 years.
Lets face it people the decision to the close the Peru pool may have been an ill conceived idea but because of current events and situation , the pool will remain closed unless repaired. NO NEW POOL.
I think we just need to get over it and understand , NO CITY POOL FOR PERU. No Money, we will join Streator!
