Economic Reality Hits Home Yes We Are Having a Tax Increase

A poster asked that I put a new heading up for his post. I don't necessarily agree that the new tax is caused by this administration but is the accumulation of many years of low taxes and of course the current economic conditions worldwide.

Another subject maybe a different heading.

Well Well, city of Peru , see todays New trib HEADLINES "a First for Peru 25+ years" city tax rate Climbs.

THANK YOU MAYOR HARL FOR ALL OF THE GREAT WORK, just what we needed a tax increase.
Now the city of La Salle has lower taxes then Peru.

The bottom line will be from all of the 1400 supporters and the need to raise taxes but to me I am not in favor of raising taxes as well as the other 8500 people in this town.
You can bet, The story line will go like this, well the decrease in sales tax has caused all of the problems afterall we had to increase the police pension fund.
No, I say where has been the focus . This economy has been slipping for the past year and is now turning around. But the city of peru ,Mayor was focused on who should run the airport, close the indoor pool, now close the outdoor pool, let business close the doors in the city and let the sales tax go down.
Some business wants to remodel or build to increase sales tax but what do we do , have rats positioned outside of the business to show our support.

I could go on for writing a book here and my frustrations would get the better of me so , THANK YOU VERY MUCH MAYOR FOR THE INCREASE IN TAXES.

Baker was in the same position over the past 40 years and yet DID NOT RAISE TAXES but brought in businesses(north of shooting park road)to help the city of peru earn the reputation of the LOWEST TAXES in the valley. Now it is La Salle who can raise the banner. You are #2 Peru.
Thank God for living in Peru.

This tax increase is for the Peru Police Pension Fund and the Peru Public Library.
This “Tax increase” is very old news.
This tax was discussed in the newspaper in several articles.
If this discussion continues with more contributors please remember you are just going over very old news.
(Anonymous 4:19) Your statement that La Salle has lower taxes than Peru proves to me you have no idea what you are talking about.
Peru Police Officers who will retire with a Pension Plan that is better funded will certainly “thank the City Officials “that voted for the increase.

If you attend a council meeting you might realize what is really going on. I recall meetings with Mr. Baker when he told his aldermen we have no money. What do you think happened to all those taxes we collected each year? As people keep saying - what do we have to show for the $45 million dollar debt Mayor Harl was handed?

Read tonights News Trib. La Salle has lower taxes then Peru as stated in the news trib. Maybe you don't know what you are talking about.

To anon 6:08
you are correct about Mr Baker stating that we had no money. Then why would Mayor Harl support spending tons of money this year but blame Mr Baker.

My point exactly !!!!!

Can you be specific about the tons of money as I am curious as to what it was spent on.
I am aware of the new truck for the electric dept. and I believe one new lawn mower. What else are you referring to?

Again you do not understand that Mayor Harl does not vote on spending the money - YOUR ALDERMEN do. Put the blame where it belongs.

What is hilarious is Lois keeps pointing out the $45 million in debt but forgets about the $110 million in assets. And the $11 million in cash. She's delusional.

Come back again when the city takes out a loan for over a million in the near future.
Let's hear some specifics of all that cold cash, the city treasurer would sure like to hear from you.

I agree with you 100%. You are absolutely CORRECT,your entire statement.

When a person NEVER ran a business, how can they interpret accounting language? When a mayor never ran a business how can we expect to run a city of $30M.
They think if we change the accounting method that is the answer to the issue but in fact they spend money without having the money. At least with Mr. Baker the cash accounting method used only allowed spending money if it was available.

You want to talk about a wishful method of doing business ? WOW ! "Spend today and I wish the money will be there tomorrow".
According to the last budget we are planning on spending $700K dollars (2010 spending on top of the wasteful 2009 spending)and WISHING & HOPING the money will be there in the future.
Anybody know a magic act?

You are telling me all the information that takes place during the Peru Finance Committee meetings is just "talk" and the committee doesn't know what they are doing.
You do know that the committee consists of Ankiewicz, Mikyska and Mertel.

To 3:30 p.m. - It looks like the old viagara must have kicked in when you saw that headline in the News-Trib yesterday. Unfortunately for you, nothing in your comment is accurate to what the community tax comparisons report in the article. Just take your time and read the article slowly and try to comprehend. If you own a calculator please use it to figure out the percentages. I understand, you just got a bit worked up when you saw that headline which ultimately resulted in your premature exaggeration of the facts. Don't feel bad, it happens. As I've told you before.
Pay attention!

News Tribune article states:
La Salle’s tax rate is nine times higher than Peru’s ($1.82 vs. 20 cents), but La Salle closed the gap slightly by increasing its rate half a percent this year while Peru’s went up 11 percent.
You owe the Blog contributors an apology for wasting our time with your ridiculous statements.
Are you going to apologize or thank me for educating you?

A question for; Anonymous 12:59 AM, May 22, 2010
Lois has proof from Public documents about Debt in the City of Peru. The Treasurer has discussed the same debt at City meetings.
Please educate us on which document you have that shows the City of Peru with “$11 million in cash.”
When you fail to find the “11 million in cash” WILL YOU APOLOGIZE for your comment
“She’s delusional”???

I will CAPATILIZE 2 WORDS below that you are having trouble understanding.
News Tribune Article:
And for the first time in decades, La Salle can boast of having a lower tax rate “INCREASE” than Peru.
La Salle’s tax rate is nine times “HIGHER” than Peru’s ($1.82 vs. 20 cents), but La Salle closed the gap slightly by increasing its rate half a percent this year while Peru’s went up 11 percent.

If we have ll million dollars in cash then we can easily afford a new pool - RIGHT? Someone should tell the city clerk, mayor, and treasurer where the $11 million is buried.
