Is It a Cap or a Hat, A Derby or a Beret??

Social media describes an incident at City Hall prior to the council meeting with reference to hats etc. Those of you that live elsewhere, does your city have rules with regard to head wear at a public mtg? Does this refer to only men's heads or are women's included?

We all need a chuckle now and then and on to serious business. I have made a decision that this blog will not tolerate the kinds of political comments referencing the upcoming election. Evidently from the tone of the comments many currently seated elected or appointed at city hall or those with an ax to grind are using the Peru Town Forum to denigrate others.

There is more than enough policy decisions about what Peru is doing or is not doing to make this interesting to read. So please abide by my decision and keep your political comments in your own social groups as I have no interest in publishing them.

MY FB PERU TOWN FORUM IS OPEN TO POLITICAL COMMENTS.
That means you can express your thoughts there.

Have you been to LaSalle County Court house or anywhere else that is a government institution? Anywhere inside flying a flag? If you have you should have enough respect to honor our country by taking off your hat. End of discussion.

Going into the La Salle Cty courthouse does not require you keep your hat off. It maybe checked upon entrance put you can put it back on.

If you are actually going to Court, that is a different standard and certainly different than sitting in a city council mtg and yes you remove your hat.

What our country should worry about is the person that has no respect for rules and no respect for our country by not taking off their hat when they are requested to do so. I have been in many places that have flags flying and the least you can do is behave in a manner that has respect for your country. The flag is a representation of the country that is free! And the person who complains about this on social media is the last person that I want to represent our country, state or city. I do remember a time when it was improper for males to wear a hat indoors, that was the time when people had more respect for others. We are not in those same times and the level of respect for others, for institutions and for themselves has been a negative change.
Does this guy who went to the city meeting want his right to be able to take the flag off the wall and burn it? I suppose he will tell you that he has a right to free speech? H-o-g-wash! Tell this guy that next time he should stand up state his name and tell everyone he doesn't want to take his hat off. I would bet that he won't have the same courage that so many that have fought in battle to protect that symbol of the flag.

Does this"rule" only appy to men? Can I wear a hat to the council mtg, the same kind that men cannot wear? Is the hat rule more of a social rule?

So much bluster about the symbols of respect, the window dressing. Your true passion is neither patriotism nor respect, it is conformity and autocracy. The flag is a symbol, representing freedom and the highest ideals of this nation. The autocracies and tyrannical regimes all demand utter respect for their symbols.

The ONLY thing that separates us from them is that we tolerate dissent and expression of dissent. The only way we are defeated is when we fracture and attack one another.

What's all the talk about the flag and respect? This is about our council not making our citizens welcome in city hall. When the pledge of allegiance is spoke you stand and remove your hat. After you sit down and do as you were. This isn't a court chamber, it's city hall . These aren't judges they're citizens! Council meetings are come as you are . Our police chief is as power hungry as the mayor. They want to control every aspect of our lives. That is not American. If he wants to wear a hat , wear a hat . Give respect when the pledge is said , then do as you were .

Bernie needs a job ! Is that all he has to do is follow semis around town and worry about ball caps ? What's he going to do when hes out of a job after the election ?

7:41 Pal, nobody buys that argument. I have a feeling that your lack of respect for government representation indicates that you have a lack of respect for yourself. Turning this into citizens not allowed or invited to government meetings is a lesson in ignorance. And I suppose if you want you should be able to carry arms into any government institution you desire? That's your right?

People who need to be told about respect for the flag need to be controlled, they are a danger to themselves. I understand teaching young children about respect, honor and being a American is something that should of been done by your parents, teachers, coaches, mentors.
Unfortunately, you must of forgot the lessons or maybe choose to be your own worst enemy. I am truly sorry for you and any trouble you want to cause. That is not American!

if someone wears a hat during a meeting it should be removed. That is very disrespectful in a courtroom, church or formal governmental meeting place. Every city around has a policy that hats must be removed during the meetings.
it is hard to believe that someone would think it is okay to do such a thing.

Does anyone know when this restriction was implemented and why? I do not believe it has anything to do with respect to the American flag. The flag has always been in council chambers and I do know that the signs on the doors asking for the removal of hats has not always been there. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure they were posted sometime during Mayor Harl's reign. Can anyone provide an answer or a reason for this change in dress code while entering council chambers?

I believe the signs were added at the same time they made everyone that wanted to speak fill out a card and it had to be approved before they were allowed to speak. Just bullying by our mayor trying to control everyone.

I was taught by my parents to remove my hat in a public building. I always have, I taught my children the same and I always will. It is a good policy, and for someone to imply that this is somehow a "government control" thing clearly doesn't get it and never will.

The fact that this is the only really topic to generate any discussion says more than anything. Are we going to put this one in the same critically important categories of fireworks, concerts and pickleball? Shall we add indoor hat policy to the list of things worth complaining about?

1:44 please show proof of your statement "that every city around has a policy that hats must be removed during the meeting", if you can that might put an end to this discussion. Thank you

I see that there is a Committee of a Whole on the city calendar for Feb. 6th however, there is no agenda posted. Does anyone know if there is one or not?

For those who are interested, according to the news tribune there is no Committee of a Whole meeting tonight.
