This blog is maintained for the sole purpose of allowing the people of Peru and those interested in the cities of the Illinois Valley to express their views.
“It doesn’t take a majority to win, just a tireless minority that will keep starting brush fires in the mind and hearts of their fellow men.” Samuel Adams
This blog is my opinion on the article in Wednesday's paper entitled "Perez goes against rule on campaign signs in Peru'.
Our current mayor lacked integrity by commenting on this article and by using it to promote himself. He doesn't need signs for exposure, he has the news media to help him with that. He also knows that no ordinance was broken.
In a prior election states attorney and state representative signs violated our ordinance and nothing was said or done. There were multiple signs on private property and multiple signs on city right of ways. Both of these are ordinance violations. I'm also pretty sure some of them were displayed earlier than 60 days before election.
In a previous city election 2 seated aldermen violated the size ordinance and the number of signs allowed on private property ordinance. Once again nothing was done.
In this case (wed. article) no ordinance was broken or violated. It is not an ordinance. It is a RECOMMENDATION. It should not have been allowed to be published.
This article, in my opinion, is proof positive that in the town of Peru the way you are treated depends on who you are.
1) Perez was a council member who voted for the "rule" at the time.
2) Perez is now running for mayor.
3) Perez has his signs all over creation.
Having said that whether this is "legal or not doesn't matter. It is just in poor taste with the other election just ending. Oh and the signs are butt ugly. I also see nothing wrong with what Harl said.
Have you been to other cities around the Illinois Valley? They have campaign signs up around their towns. This is our mayor being petty and controlling.
How can anyone complain now especially after the last election in which there were hundreds of signs all over the Illinois valley? Let's face it. In this town it's all about who the signs represent not the signs themselves. If it had been any of the other candidates nothing would have been said.
It's not too hard to tell that elections are around the corner. Apparently signs are being stolen from yards and all of a sudden the splash pad is appearing to become closer to a reality. After reading the article in the tribune with regards to the splash pad, I wonder whether or not it is still being considered Phase I which is supposed to eventually lead to Phase II - a swimming pool. With all that is being planned and all that the city is supposedly funding, I'd like to ask the Friends for Peru Pool where they think the money will come from and if there will be enough land left to add a pool in the same location as the splash pad.
That article in the trib will be the first of many free political campaign ads for the mayor. Stay tuned for many more . Especially after each government meeting. It is just blatantly obvious to the average Peru resident. It's ashame that those government officials at 4th and Fulton think we're that dumb and under estimate the intelligence citizens of Peru.

9:50 Your comment is valid however, isn't there a 3rd candidate running for mayor? Wonder why wasn't he contacted for his opinion on this article?
The reason this is "news" is simple.

You can't limit or control campaign signs. Illinois supreme Court says so . End of story .

Well I know only one that is a publicity hound.
