Schools Will Be Closing Tomorrow

It has been announced that Peru Public Schools and La Salle Peru H.S. and activities for both are canceled for tomorrow.  I would expect that Peru Catholic will be closed along with La Salle schools but I have not seen an announcement on that as of now.

All the closings and cancellations are posted on the WLPO website and yes La Salle schools and Peru Catholic are on it.

Will the city of Peru cancel its council meeting this evening?
I beleive they should cancel, but I suspect Harl and a majority of aldermen will not cancel because they know the weather will keep the turnout very low. That will help minimize the publics knowledge of the scandal.
Most of the aldermen as well as the mayor want this scandal to pass asap. They would rather sweep it all under the rug instead of allowing a ray of sunlight to shine upon it.
Justice will be cheated atain in Peru.

most roads where fine this morning. are they closing the schools just because it is cold? What's next, send all the kids to Hawaii until they graduate high school? I think the school people are over reacting. Last time I asked, every school has a furnace and they generally work most of the time.

Close the schools because it is cold. Close the schools because it is hot. Close the schools because it is a full moon. Close the school because the teachers have a meeting. How many other excuses are these union hacks going to make up not to work?

10:46 am, Oh that's nice. You're stretching pretty far just to rip unions aren't you?
Parents of school-children throughout the area are sure glad that a knucklehead like you isn't making the call to send the kids out in this weather. You should be advised that the decision to cancel school for any reason is made by "Management" aka the Superintendant, not the "Union Teachers".
Get a clue!

The schools are closed becasue kids walk to school, buses will not start, and the days have to get made up anyway. The union does NOT make the decision the local superintendent makes the decision and the ARE NOT IN THE UNION.

If a bus breaks down and then get stuck, espeially in the counrty it i NOT worth it. You are all morons if you think it is a good idea to have school today.

Closing schools because wind chills can freeze skin in under 5 minutes, and many roads are unsafe with white out blizzard conditions is not just a liberal concern about getting your ass sued. It makes sense.

The stupidity, hatred of schools and teachers, is just rampant with some of you. So many more children take the buses now, and they require children to stand and wait. Also in weather like this even minor road accidents can quickly turn deadly waiting in the blizzard.

You are absolute idiots blaming a teachers union for schools all over Illinois canceling during a wind chill warning.

please don't anyone think I agree with someone who wants children to go to school today. I realize how bad the roads will remain and the dangers of extreme cold and worse with the wind chill factored in.
Maybe 100 years ago kids went to school on all days but it was most likely when the school was within a few blocks of their home. Neighborhood schools don't exist any longer and actually not that many kids live close enough to even walk.
If I had young children and schools were open mine would be at home.

Actually talked to my mother who is a retired school teacher. Unions have nothing to do with schools closing due to this type of weather. That's crazy to even think that. My mother told me that school districts also close schools due to the expense of keeping the schools warm with frigid temps. Personally, our children are not in school enough. Way too many holidays, too long of a spring break and Christmas break. The school day is too short also. My opinion. Many people go into education careers for the wrong reasons. A teaching certificate is too easy to obtain. Teachers are a blessing, but honestly my children had teachers that couldn't even write a grammatically correct sentence. Look how many NFL football players go into teaching in college while on a football scholarship. Listen to them being interviewed after a game, that's some of our teachers. Need I say more. Thanks to all the teachers out there who love being teachers for the right reasons. A
Teacher is there to teach, not to be a parent to their students. Parents need to be a parent.

90% of the schools in Illinois are
closed today. Get a life you people who think its the union closing the schools. boy are you stupid.

Thank you Lois! These comments are awful. Mr. Cross has made great decisons with the weather and countles other things for our children over the years. I cannot imagine deciding something like this so that jerks can make comments like this. Whether we have school today or tomorrow or not everyone has to make up the days. The superintendent in the union? That is the funniest thing I've ever heard and our teachers are so dedicated. Leave the union comments for other things but not our wonderful staff in Peru schools.

2:56 Why are you thanking Lois and why are you asking her to leaves the union comments for other things? You ARE smart enough to realize that "anon" is not Lois - AREN'T you? Lois is Lois. Anon is some unknown.

Really 2:17? Some NFL players you see on TV are education majors, so that is who is teaching your kids? Well guess what, NFL players also major in business, art, political science and every other major under the sun. Terrible way to rip educators. Just for the record, the school year is the same length regardless of how many snow days, Christmas breaks, holidays or summers. It hasn't changed in decades and most of my educator friends believe we should have the kids at school more but this is not something they can control.

3:39 yes thank you I can make that distinction. I was thanking Lois for her common sense comments about school being closed today. In case you need help distinguishing, the rest of my comments were for those making ridiculous statements about unions and their involement with school closings. Hopefully that clears it up for you. Now, are YOU smart enough to get it, or do you need some additional explanation?

Maybe we should run the schools from April to November. That might solve a lot of the weather issues.

4:24 or we would just let them cancel the two or three times a year when they need to, as they always have. Why this is a big deal I don't understand. Some of the kids going to school are 3 or 4 years old so I think it is pretty reasonable to reschedule these days until later in the year.

They could probably teach the kids everything in grades 1 through 8 in half the time if they went to school year round. Have a two week break every quarter, that way there will be plenty of time for family vacations throughout the year.

What the devil is so important that LP is going on with naming the gym even if the games are cancelled? It can't be named at a later date? Many of the older people who knew Dr. Sellett will no doubt stay home instead of falling on their butts and freezing.

Anonymous said...

I went into teaching for the days on, not the days off.

Anonymous said...

Why name this gym after all these years? Dr. Sellett was a nice and great man but why not name the new gym at the new school that we all know is coming?

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Poor decision to go on with the dedication. Takes away from the honor.

Anonymous said...

NO it does not because like most people on here you have NO idea what you are talking about. Quit your whining. I think it is nice they are holding the ceremony tonight. It's cold, the streets are clear, put on a coat and go.

The fact is there are family memnbers who flew in so LP is doing it now out of respect to those people who made the effort to be there.

I am so sick and tired of the negativity on here. Pitiful!

12:56, I'm not sick of the negativity here, because I can take the truth. I do agree that having the dedication go forward as planned is the right thing to do. It's cold, but really, bundle up and quit complaining. I didn't have to go to work the last two days, but I did. Warm your vehicle up, put your coat on, walk to vehicle, get in and drive. Oh, what magic that is.

Anonymous said...

Why did they even bother with dedicating it? It is not new, and it will be demolished with the rest of the school when the school board moves on the next part of the plan. Kind of stupid if you ask me. Why didn't they name the new "Sports Complex" after Dr. AJ? At least that will be around awhile. This gym will be nothing but a pile of rubble in five years. Mark my words.

7:13 Has hit the nail on the head. The L/P school board with their hand picked administration is going to push for a new school complex that taxpayers will be forced to pay for. Peru has Harl and L/P has Quesse & Wrobleski.

Facts are not negativity. It must be you.

hey 7:13- the job of the school board is to hire a superintendent. Their job is to hire a superintendent and act on recomendations from the supt.

I hope all you morons that speak tough with your cyber muscles are going to pick up a petition to run for office.
