First Winter Fun Day Sponsored by Peru City Officials and Recreation Board

The kids came and had fun and there was still enough snow on the hillside for sleigh rides. Free hot cocoa provided  by McDonalds and free hot dogs, not sure who provided them.

Alderman Perez organized the event and asked all the other alderman to come by and help with the event. I bet even the Mayor was asked to stop by. The help consisted of Ald. Perez, Tom Riordan and Linda Dzierzynski and Ray Zborowski. I understand Ald. Ferrari stopped by for about 10 minutes and Ald. Potthoff called to say he could not come. Also Becky Mueller stopped by also for a short time. I was told that people asked where the mayor was.

The ice skating rink was in no condition to be used.
The people that came had a good time and were heard to say it was so good to have the city putting on such a fun event.

Typical behavior from the aldermen. Anything Perez organizes, they can't be bothered to show up for. This truly shows that the aldermen, besides Perez, have no desire to have fun, community events for Peru. Shame on them and of course a big shame on the mayor, but it's all expected! I could have written the script before it happened.

Maybe they should've told Harl of the free hot dogs. Then he would've been there!

Out of 11 city officials and 6 rec board members that's all that showed up? Thank you alderman Perez for starting a fun activity for young and old alike. I hope it will continue and become better and better. I was told that a Mr. Bret King also not only showed up but helped. It's a shame that city reps cannot even make an appearance let alone donate some time to helping out.

Go figure perhaps the mayor was consulting with his attorney--am sure he wasnt missed by anyone is a really good picture whoever took it

Who is Bret King?

A Peru resident who likes to volunteer, friend of Ald. Perez and many others because he always willing to lend a hand when needed.

Bret is no relation to Harls appointed fire chief.

I think is is great that Rod Perez is active in all of the community interests that he participates in. Rod is a lot more than a aldermen and I am in deep appreciation to him.
But people do not criticize a Aldermen or Mayor because he does not participate in activities that do not pertain directly to city management. When one approaches the ballot box they should be considering who will manage the city to the ultimate of excellence.
I find it very discouraging to find that certain people think that because a person is a city representative that he is open season to be made fun of. All of us know that we all have shortcomings which we don't appreciate being made fun of. Remember this in making fun of others. This is also not a objective of this blog.
I do believe that the the idea of the Rec Bd. and its paid director should be putting on events such as Rod has just done. Possibly a goal would be to have at least one activity/month and every month. The $75,000 per year that the city gives to the Rec Bd yearly should support this much and more.
Alderman Perez, Thank you for not only being a outstanding alderman but also for being a great citizen of Peru.

2:40 Nobody is making fun of any body. This activity was meant for the citizens of the community and I believe was to be held in conjunction with the rec board. Once again I will say that of the 11 city officials and 6 rec board members I find it sad that only 3 helped.

I don't agree with you. Elected representatives of the people should be visible and present at events whenever possible and not only in an election year. This is their city to govern for us and their presence indicates to us that not only are they trying to do a good job and they are also a part of the community like you and I, one of the residents. It should be a sharing experience. If you want a management team to pay bills and make ordinances for the city, hire an outside firm.
All you have to do is visit some of our neighboring cities and see how their mayors and aldermen participate in events and in fact even work on promoting them.

And good luck trying to get our Recreation Board to do what you speak of. They all have their special sporting events and that is where you usually find them.

Additionally I would like to thank Ray and Linda for representing the Recreation Board but that was not a board decision it was an individual personal decision.

Maybe I'm being too critical but could this event be another example of why we should have aldermen at large? Think about it. The two aldermen that did make an appearance were from the 1st ward. Isn't McKinley Park in the 1st ward? Haven't several aldermen commented during council meetings that "that's not in my ward" indicating that they wanted nothing to do with it. Alderman, in my opinion, should not just concentrate their efforts on one ward and one ward only. They should represent each and every citizen of Peru. "Aldermen at large" may be just the "change" Peru needs.

2:40. You should see how the mayor and aldermen show up to events in an election year. This criticism they are receiving for not showing up yesterday is deserved.

Anon 2:58 How do you interpret 8:23 AM's comment "Maybe they should've told Harl of the free hot dogs. Than he would have been there. Remember that it is you telling 2:40P.M. Nobody is making fun of anybody. Now truthfully, do you really think that this is not making fun of someone? If you do not think it is not making fun of someone what do you call it?
Lois, when approaching the ballot box what is the one ultimate question that you ask yourself that determines who you will vote for? I prefer to vote for the individual whom I believe will manage the city to the ultimate of excellence. Public Relations and popularity do not trump the persons ability to manage the city to the ultimate of excellence. Taking the popularity and public relations aspects out of the leadership of the city and inserting management to the ultimate of excellence is why I have come to the conclusion that Peru needs a city manager. you are not going to find a city manager occupying his time at every city activity, he as many efficient city officials will be spending his time in managing the city and leaving the city committees perform their own reasons of existence. If these committees are not responding to the fulfillment of their specific mission he will go to the Mayor and council to take all necessary steps to make it a more active and efficient board.

The past 5 years have proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that we need a city manager. The Mayor position will still exist under a city manager and yes he would still have the responsibility of being the public face of the city as the aldermen should also. That is what we should be seeing.

Didn't Alderman Rod make the recommendation for a city manager about a month ago?

8:22 you are wasting your time. I agree with you, but making fun of people is very commonplace on the blog. It is very sad and I have spoken up about this as well, only to be shut down or not posted. It is one of several reasons there is no credibility here and stupid comments (like the one about the hot dogs) take away from any potential good that could come from this.

And please tell us in a light hearted way, what once in a while tickles your funny bone. This blog is the real world and I don't know about you all I have to do to hear similar conversation is to turn on the TV and listen to any of the news channels and you will then realize this is childs play in comparison to the big people on the news channels.
Blogs are not unique and neither is Twitter or FB, and this blog is just one of the methods of media communication.

Anonymous said...

Lois, your difference of opinion from mine is very cutely written and if everyone had this knack of communication we would not be in discussion of making fun of others. Yes the blog, TV, Twitter and FB are the real world but this does not make it proper for them to be insulting for the simple reason of being insulting. As for the big people on the news channels , the executives etc. they are creating and therefore responsible for many of our counties problems. What they cannot create they enlarge.
No matter how much all of us enjoy the Freedom of Expression we should not have to use it so loosely that we also have to justify our usage as a simple two wrongs make a right. I would rather read a intelligent comment than a insulting one as I know you and most others would also.

What's the big deal about a event that had no snow and a ice rink with water. Were all those City reps/park board members suppose to sign autographs and shake hands for good intentions. Much to much about a Mayor not going to a event that didn't happen. I would much rather having my elected officials watching our tax dollars.

Anonymous said...

A event is only a event if something happens. Being criticial of the Parks department of a event that didn't happen makes many of you desperate for attention. But then again maybe that was the purpose of the EVENT.

Anonymous said...

An event such as the Christmas parade Harl was a no show also. Parade involved our fire department also. A no show at this event was also our appointed by Harl full-time fire chief, who is receiving a $84,000 salary plus benefits as of oct. 2013. Approx. 6-8 weeks on the job and doesn't attend an event whereas fire apparatus is involved. Shame on all these people.

Anonymous said...

Come on! Harl was going to lose whether he was at the parade or not at the parade. I think he took the better of the two choices and avoided himself more embarrassment by not being there. He was elected Mayor of Peru and if he performs that office adequately all will be happy with him besides those who are only active for their own self gain.
Also for Fire Chief King it doesn't make alot of difference if he is at a parade as his job is to manage a Fire Department and if he is managing it properly he is accomplishing his occupation. Continuously bringing up his wage is not serving any purpose as I don't evaluate him in a dollar and cents factor. Would it make you any happier if he was getting paid $30,000 per year and not doing the job? I stand alongside the recent blogger who said he voted for who would manage the city to the ultimate of excellence. In many cities the Mayor sits at the Judges Stand and they have a Parade Marshall in the parade.

Lois- can you stop publishing rude comments that refer to the main as "Hurl" or comments about him being fat. I do not agree with what he is always doing but those comments cheapen the use of this blog. Just asking! :)

I know you personally do not write these rude comments but maybe you can just delete the comments that want to call names.

Anonymous said...

Lois I don't think most bloggers have the faintest idea of the per centage of comments that you throw out. So why not raise the bar to the standard of "If in doubt-Throw out!". Try this for one month and I think that the kooks will become tired of wasting their time writing comments only to know they are not going to be published on this blog and the good comments will increase.
At times I would like to see the blog step out of the box and go into subjects of the history of Peru, including how certain nationalities occupied certain vicinities of Peru and some recipes from these nationalities. It would also be good natured fun to hear some of the popular jokes and stories of these areas. Does anyone have a good yarn to spin about work places of long ago that were in the area. Down town Peru has had a complete turnover since I have grown up and the Peru Mall must be approaching 45 years in existence. Does anyone know how they cut the ice on the river years ago and how did they preserve it for the summer? Does anyone remember Harry Hundt and the Doodledoorfers, Herman Link and his motto for his 5&10 "everything but room" or some of the kinder words you would be called by Dale at the pool hall when ordering a milk shake with only a half hour before closing. How could we forget a haircut from Fritz Coon when someone walked by his shop both arms would go up in the air,one waving and the other holding a chunk of hair in the clippers which would take approximately three weeks to grow back. Who can remember "Bill the Greek" who never served a bad meal in his life, or the huge fudge ripple ice cream cones of Pete Laurer at The Hub Sports Shop. Good people, good memories, and good times. Lets hear some of your memories of these times.

You offer some great topics but even though I love history and enjoy listening to the times of past Peru, that is for another blog for another person. I encourage you to take it on.
