After this evenings Peru City Council Meeting you wondered who knew what and who was actually telling the truth or actually knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were right.
Ald. O'Beirne evidently took it upon himself to conduct an informal survey about the swimming pool and he used city worker K. Drennan as the go between because he is the one person who has "worked" on both the indoor pool and the outdoor pool. O'Beirne says that the figures of the recreation department are all wrong because Drennan comes up with different figures that are much less than the ones I quoted earlier and much less than the previously generally accepted figures. In fact so low that he claimed the cost to the city per day at the pool was only $92 and not the 1,041.62 given out by the Recreation Committee last week. Oh did I say that O'Beirne and Drennan are friends and it is commonly rumored that he has done work on O'Beirnes rental property. It is now Mayor Harls turn as he tells O'Beirne that he was out of order in doing this on his own and breaking the chain of command. The Mayor then quotes different figures on water loss using the water meter readings from several summer months from a previous summer. Ald. Ferrari got his 2 cents in also by initially confronting Drennan as to why didn't he speak out at the recreation meeting last week and then apologizing if he was in error. It seems pretty evident that someone is covering up the truth and the true figures or there are few people who cannot put 2 + 2 together and get 4... But if the pool is closed and do check back from my earlier posting about the salary that Drennan got for the Peru City Pool work, how would that affect the type of work he would be doing in the city water dept.
Some how I don't believe we have heard the end of this story! As for me I would prefer the truth.

OMG - what and who are we, the citizens of Peru, supposed to believe if our governing body (aldermen) and our work force cannot even agree with each other? If they cannot work together for the betterment of the City of Peru then how can we possibly solve the many problems we face today because of neglect yesterday? The problem I have with this particular situation (pool leakage) is "Why has Mr. Drennan and Mr. O'Beirne waited until now to dispute the figures that have been tossed around for some time now?" If they indeed knew them to be wrong why not speak it when they were first mentioned? Doesn't seem right to me!
Do the aldermen have the right to take it upon themselves to tell city employees to perform a specific job? Shouldn't that be the duty of the Superintendent? Isn't the Superintendent the boss who assigns duties? Just curious!
It is the responsibility of the SPW to tell the city employees what needs to be done. It is very apparent that Ald. O'Beirne bypassed this procedure. Super Bleck was asked if he knew about it and when and he said he found out today, meaning yesterday Therefore he was unaware that one of the city workers(Drennan) upon the suggestion or direction of O'Beirne was asked to come up with different figures so the pool could remain open.(Why?) Maybe the longest sitting alderman on the council felt he had the "right" to do this and how "cozy" is his relationship with city worker Drennan? This needs to be investigated and not behind closed doors since this already has become a public discussion.
Hopefully one or more of our aldermen will bring this discrepancy to task and investigate until someone finds the truth. I think it's about time our aldermen work together instead of against each other. When alderman Ferrari questioned Mr. Drennan on the amount of water lost why didn't another comrade speak up and back him up. The figures he (alderman) presented have been tossed around for a long, long time. Mr. Drennan's figures are brand spanking new!
The “water leaking” is nothing compared to the “money leaking” out of the City of Peru.
The pool will never make money. It is impossible.
The only revenue is from admission charges. Residents can’t argue this fact.
Residents can now discuss if they want to raise their taxes to pay for the “existing pool” or dramatically increase taxes to build a “new pool”.
There is not enough revenue in 2010 to pay for all the 2010 expenses in the City of Peru.
The Pool expenses and the vote to eliminate the expense is “the first of many votes” to come.
Please contact your Alderman because they will be voting as they have in the past eight years on the direction the City of Peru finances are headed.
Signed,
Reality for Peru
It is sure nice to see an honest and truthful blog about the city! The fact is the employee and alderman are obviously working together to try to keep his overtime available. This employee was origanally hired for water loss and meters> Is he doing his job? Birds of the sake feather flock together (obeirne drennan)
Lois - the agenda for Tuesdays rec. meeting shows it as starting at 6:30. Do you know which is correct?
My information came from the City of Peru Web site and that is what is still posted. I have not seen the agenda, is it also on the web site?. If so perhaps a call to Heidi would straighten it out.
"City of Peru Recreation Commission Meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room."
Lois: Yes it's under City Gov't., agendas, committee meetings located on the Peru Web site.
Lois keep the truth comeing. We need someone with telling us the honest to God truth.
Drennan is trying to save his job, and OBeirne is helping him. I trust the meters more than I trust Drennan.
