Wow look at the full schedule in Wenona this week.  Just a short drive if you are looking for some summer fun.

Well, you see Wenona obviously encourages citizen involvement in these events. On the other hand, The Boss, Barnaby Jones, and the Wanabe King don't want to have anything to do with the citizens other than taking their sales tax dollars.

9:37 am Don't forget the aldermen. If an alderman really wanted to, he or she could organize an event for the public. But oh wait, the alderman who did that got beat.

10:19, no, an Alderman can't. Barnaby Jones opened up a criminal investigation on the one that tried.

ATTENTION 9:37 & 10:19 You are answering your own question. Organize
a event for the public on your own. Yes the alderman who organized events for the public on his own got beat.
Has anyone ever given any thought to the fact that a alderman is elected to manage the city not to conduct uninsured sponsored public events. Peru has a recreation director and a Rec Bd. to handle events such as the past alderman was participating in.
The former alderman of the 2nd stepped out on his own and never did a complete job of organization.
Today as always teamwork is a very important tool.

Oh please 2:41, if it wasn't for alderman Perez, the rec board would never have planned a winter fun day. Give credit where credit is due!

Well said 2:41. Same people making the same ridiculous comments. One idiot who makes up about one of every five comments using the same demeaning names while a couple others about faint every time some little town has an event. Vegas themed Wenona Days? Wow! I'll bet that is a hoot.

If you want to help our town, then get out from behind your computer and complaining and do something. Stop making excuses about how no one lets you volunteer. There are countless ways to volunteer and do good for the community besides meaningless one time events. Join a service organization and do something. Quit complaining.

2:41, but the point is, "official Peru" does not want anything to do with "outsiders" helping. Any citizen that steps forward is viewed as a threat to the power structure. Any individual that steps forward is marginalized and patronized. The "powers" actively work against volunteers.

no place to put this but here. I see that Mr. Towne has decided to seek reelection. The same Mr. Towne that flushed thousands of dollars down the toilet prosecuting a guy that helped and eagle. The same Mr. Towne that has created what some call an illegal police force designed specifically to go hunting for drug crimes he can prosecute and better yet cash he can confiscate. He will be spending hundreds of thousands of dollars defending this in front of the Illinois Supreme Court.
A quick review of Mr. Towne's campaign fund shows a virtual who's who of local defense lawyers and unions. One odd entry in a donation from the Scott Harl Campaign for Mayor. Curious the Mr. Towne did not take action on the illegal overtime that the Boss authorized for the "friends of Scott" working for the city. Hmmmmm.... that's how things roll in LaSalle Coutny and with the LaSalle County Democrats.

5:18 - in order to have an event in Peru, some business must get money. With the fireworks, it is the two bars. The fireworks also generate a lot of temporary No Parking signs made by a local sign company. One that wanted ten grand to put Peru on the hydro plant. One that frequently donates to the cause.

So to make an event that will be supported by the local powers that be, first you need to figure out what the revenue stream will be and how much it will draw. Then build the event around it. Still trying to figure out who will make money on the "Airport Non-religious Winter Holiday drive to nowhere and looks at silly lights" event. Could it be that the "Fresh tomatoes and other fruit shipped in from Mexico and South America" guy will set up a hot chocolate stand?

These little terms of endearment for our city officials tend to catch on. I heard somebody at the IHOP talking about "Barnaby Jones" in relation to construction on Peoria Street. I heard "Bobby V." being talked about at a local bar. Naturally, "The Boss" is being discussed all over the place - as in "You need to juice The Boss to get anything done in Peru."

For all you complainers out there I made a few calls to Ottawa, and LaSalle just to find out who organizes their events. in Ottawa their river fest is its own committee that is funded but the city.
They have an army of local business and volunteers' to make this happen.
In LaSalle the it is the LaSalle Business Asso. that did the event last Friday.
All of these got their Start at the Parks and Recreation Boards.
They are always looking for ideas and VOLUNTEERS.
Have a great day haters of Peru

10:39 The former alderman did all the planning for the winter fun days. The rec board only stepped in when forced to by the city council.

I didn't vote for Alderman, Mayor to organize a Elvis Day, Sled ride or religious revival. That is not the job. You have park boards, resident groups and clubs to do that. There are thousands of different events in the area. Every weekend we have many choices and why expect Alderman to spend time organizing your social calendar. I don't want my tax dollars spent for this purpose.
Many and most of the events are done by outside groups, not city councils. Many negative comments about the concerts at the airport and then all the support for a few riding down a hill in a sled (really!).
We all agree that those elected have the responsibility to make good decisions with tax money and its understandable to be pro or con on those votes. But, PLEASE don't elect someone to fill your social calendar.

related to the comments stating the obvious that the aldermen and mayor should not be organizing events. Yup, you are all correct. The problem in Peru is that they "disorganize" volunteers. Meaning - if they don't like a particular project or event, they will go out of their way to put the kibosh to it. This is because Peru's city council and mayor (lower case intentional) micromanage. Its not only that. I would like to be on a committee to help organize a Peru event. Trouble is, "they" don't want a Peru event unless there is a buck to be made. We could have an entire week activities around the baseball tournaments. But, nobody even knows they are happening, except for a report or two on the radio.
If the mayor and council are serious, they will ask for a citizen event committee to be formed, with no restriction on the number of volunteers so there would be no baloney application process. Showing up would be the only prerequisite.
