Here Is the Answer That Peru Did Not Give to its Residents.

I guess the only way we can tell if you are telling the truth about Peru not discussing the China trip is to review the minutes and the video. If you are accurate and Peru did not discuss the China trip then I fault the City council. If the minutes and the video provide us with reasons and discussion in going to China then I fault you for your critical claim that nothing was discussed. We should know very soon if this item was discussed by reading the minutes or/and reviewing video.

I attended the mtg. Whomever wrote the initial comment evidently thought that Peru council would do what the Ottawa goverment did and make a public announcement thru the newspaper after it was announced at a council mtg. Peru did approve the expenses paid trip for Harl and Vickry but did not go beyond that. Evidently had been discussed in private as Ald. Ferrari gave a very vehement NAY.
The United States does have a status quo relationship with China to say the least and bringing in Chinese investment is also a questionable practice but that is my opinion China is still a Communist country is a fact.

11;59 The video is already on the city website. Listen to it and tell us if they went into detail on their trip. As a matter of fact I don't believe either the mayor or our economic developer said a word. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Luke what we have here is a definite failure to communicate. For a elongated period of time the radio and newspapers published the trip to China as if only Harl and Vickrey were going. The problem of the meeting of the whole which is the true meeting of the mayor and city council is that only those invited can attend. The next meeting the true city council meeting appears to be a play back of the original rehearsal meeting with all the bugs removed and all that the mayor does not want announced at the latter meeting discussed and put aside.
The end result being that the residents of Peru do not truly know what is going on and by the time they do know it appears that they have been misled on purpose. How many other towns have a meeting of the whole before the regular city council meeting every week?
Nine years ago this present Mayor campaigned and won with the promise of transparency, many are still waiting for this transparency along with many of other promises made such as a ordinance of a two term limitation for a mayor to be in office.

The Mayor of Peru is in his third term of his first position of leadership of his life. These nine years of office have proven that Mayor Harl has become more secretive each year in his hands off style of management. This secretiveness has not only led to a complete loss of communication between himself and those he represents but also a belief that he is not trustworthy. Mayor Harl should consider taking steps to resign and start leaving Peru move ahead at the pace it was years ago.

I reviewed the video and listened to explanations and plan of action with the China trip. Alderman explained the potential and the reasons for going to China, What else do you need. There was also a public comment section in which anybody from the audience was welcome to give their thoughts and nobody spoke up. Alderman Ferrari voted no and gave no explanation or any reason? The video also had a good exchange on other areas like the rezoning or apartment complex and the council voted down the zoning board recommendation, also another vote about a bar opening up in a residential area and that got the gander of a few others. I didn't think the council members would vote down a tavern. I was also disappointed that I had to review a video to see the meeting highlights, the news reporter covered almost nothing from the meeting. I think much of the confusion could have been avoided if the meeting had some coverage of the events.

part of hurl's problem is the persons he is taking guidance from;and yes it would help if we had a real newspaper covering events not the fool we have who trys to make everything he writes into a joke or something to laugh at.

immediately after the election of 2009 Hurl became a politician with different goals and different friends. Maybe he will get reoriented in the orient. Anything would be better than what Peru has today.

Is the city Council suppose to call everyone to explain what is going on. That is what the meetings are for, Show up and ask questions. The only people who show are Rod and his minions. And no matter what is said they don't share the whole truth. Just like the mayor.

Wrong 3:44...In Peru it's : Show up. Fill out a card with one question. Make your statement. Sit down. Don't expect any answer from the Powers that Be
because they don't respond in public to the rabble.....Most don't respond in
private either, even if you reside in their ward...i e Radke and Payton

I live in the 2nd ward and I asked about the China trip and when road work will be done on my street and got a full answer. I don't know who you are but... When asked it was answered what else do you want, I'm guessing you are one of the few who got beat and are no longer with the city so no matter if they were to give you a correct answer you would still call it a coverup.

Fed up with whinners

I also live in Peru and the west end. I have asked questions and have always got answers. And in a courteous manner. I have no idea where these toxic comments about city officials come from? We have some educated and experienced city officials. Many of them value low tax rates, economic expansion and putting money into the infrastructure.
I realize that there are critics everywhere. Many of the critics are about money. Why didn't I get that job, what's in it for them? Most of us can see those critics and the agendas from a mile away.

Sadly your comment has completely baffled me. Please explain your problem again.

I would like a job description of Peru City Alderman?

Once elected do they just sit back and attend meetings?

Since there are 2 in each ward, do they have a responsibility to work together and figure out how they will watch over their ward? Once that is done, will they travel on a fairly regular basis and note the condition of their ward, like streets, rentals, curbs and gutter drainage issues, motor homes parked on the street never moving, dump trucks parked in yards, garbage and extras like furniture not being picked up.

So you think that is the job of he residents but this seems to be a new age where residents are not necessarily home owners and the actual home owners are landlords sometimes of over 100 pieces of property in the County. Some of these owners never actually rent out the property altho at time the grass might get cut. Renters are not likely to contact an alderman, but just move on to another more well maintained neighborhood. Actually the number of homes turned into rentals is increasing and as a result this is a continuing problem.

You have a very dismal outlook on the elected officials in our community. And make the job out to be nothing more than looking at peoples yards. We all know that those elected have great responsibilities and many of them are very serious about making Peru a better place to live. Peru has many more responsibilities than my neighboring city. The financial position of Peru is excellent and a result of many years of making a effort on economic development. Peru has a strong electrical output and residents benefit. Peru has a low rate for utilities and residents benefit. Peru has excellent police, fire, public works. Peru has excellent schools in which the city was involved by decisions to raise sales tax. We could go on about those lousy politicians and all they do is look for used furniture. We all know better. You may have a deep resentment for Peru leaders and that's your choice. The fact is that Peru has in the past and today some very smart, experienced and dedicated officials with a eye on current and future directions. Sooner or later you will finally be able to get rid of some, some will get tired of the attacks and leave. Will you be better off with those that you prefer to be in charge? I doubt that.

12:24 This is your opinion others know better. Anywhere from 6 to 7 aldermen come to meetings without any preparation.

Anonymous said...

Why prepare when the meeting of a whole is the true meeting held behind closed doors and each alderman is informed of what and how he is to express himself at the public 7 o'clock meeting. Bernie is the worst mayor that Peru has ever had and King as his leading lady is no better!
