School building turned business: Yoga, hoops, more - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

La Salle making good use of a former school.  Peru will soon have one in Washington, can the city do the same for its residents? Or will it be more excuses of no funds.

Cut the sarcasm and go yoga it up in La Salle. Maybe they can tax it like NY.

My what ruffled your feathers. Peru is in need of some type of location as this, why not Washington School.

It could work. Mayor Grove personally bought that building. Maybe if somebody buys Washington School, it could be used in the same way. I don't think the city wants to get into the rental business.

Not many people remember it but "Central School" in Peru was used as a community building and municipal offices. "Central" was located south of 4th street near the library.

Washington school would make a awesome community center, some kind of place to have kids birthday party's inside bouncy houses , meeting room for community events. Boy ,cub, girl scouts etc.

I will answer your question Lois. Why not Washington School and why not Peru? The answer is not complicated. Why not Peru is because Peru lacks elected officials with the vision to see the opportunity this type of situation provides. Why not Peru is because Peru lacks elected officials with the imagination and committment to understand the importance of providing quality of life opportunities when they come along. Finally, why not Peru because Peru lacks enough elected officials with the work ethic to do the research, study and planning to bring such projects to fruition. However, they may choose to hire Chamlin to look into for a hefty cost to the taxpayers and then simply watch it die when they see the amount of work and organization involved. Similar to a bike path plan, a pool plan, a splash pad plan, a downtown redevelopment plan, a waterstreet redevelopment plan, a landfill and boat ramp plan, and on and on and on. Talk is cheap I know. So is the critcism I am offering this morning. But I know this for certain. We need different elected officials in Peru and we need to switch to Council/Manager form of government. The sooner the better.
Happy Fourth of July everybody. Gotta love that "free speech" thing!

How were the fireworks in your neighborhood last night? Like Jennifer on WLPO stated this morning that she had 3 dogs who were terrified by them so did I. One was under the bed, one behind the toilet, and one barked continuously. I know it's the 4th and I know it's fun but some were so loud they made you jump everytime they went off (and that was quite often and for a long time). Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how we can curb this situation?

How we can curb illegal fireworks? Police Drpartments should do their job and not overlook this activity. How about publicizing that people who are caught will be fined(excessively), ticketed, etc... Enforcing the law!!!! Wonder how many calls in the illinois valley whereas a person has called their police department regarding illegal fireworks? People get tickets for their dog running loose.

I do remember Central School where they held city council meetings and it also served as a community center. My father loved going there to eat lunches served by maybe meals on wheels and afterward the seniors would sit around and talk and play cards. It was the highlight of his day being able to be with people as he lived alone.

Why isn't there a public access in peru to the illinois river? That would be a safe way to get to the beaches. Like the beaches along the river. Like the beach area on the river in back of St. Bede. I have a question. Someone said that St. Bede leases an area of beach front behind the school along the river to those people who have a boat and want an area of their own as a beach picnic area, Isn't that all public? how can St. Bede do that? Legally they don't own an area along the waterway from what I've been told. . Could someone explain this? Can anybody be on that beach area?

It's 11:08 pm and fireworks are still being shot off in my neighborhood. Last night I was driving home and saw people in the middle of the road shouting off fireworks. I'm trying to sleep and this noise is annoying. The police should be giving tickets, especially when it's this late at night.

Yes I am still up and the fireworks continue, people with pets are having problems, people with ill health are surely annoyed and the rest of us are just sick and tired of this. I am not sure what types of fireworks are sold in those tents at the mall but if it is anything that makes a great deal of noise, it should not be allowed to be sold here. I agree absolutely we need stricter enforcement, even if it is putting extra patrols on bicycles so they can really hear what is going on.

4:36 - there are two boat launches at the end of the slough road on the south side of the river. One is private, but not more than 30 yards from it is a public boat launch and very large parking area. This are is owned by the City of Peru. Obviously, our Rec Committee prefers that nobody know about this because it is NEVER discussed or promoted.
Concerning the St. Bede property - what do you mean that "legally they don't own an area along a waterway." Are you saying that they don't own the property or are you saying that waterfront property is somehow excluded from private property rights? If you are saying the latter, that is not the law in Illinois. There is a law in the Peoples Republic of California that strips property rights from people that own waterfront parcels, but so far Illinois still maintains a capitalist economy - for the most part.

Reading blogs, The beach area on the river in back of St Bede's, isn't that public? How can a school make money by leasing beach area areas to people? What does the school charge? Doesn't the state own that? Maybe DNR could explain.

Peru Town Forum said...

St Bede has owned those waterfront beaches for as long as they have owned that property The city has a good relationship with the school and I don't believe they are looking to cause any trouble.
Most landowners that have property that abuts lakes and rivers next to their property own up to the waters edge.
Oceanfront property is different. I believe the state of Oregon owns all beaches and people have access to most if not all oceanfront property.

Since the city doesn't have a swimming pool, that area of beach on the river would be an inexpensive way for family's to enjoy a day.

it is private property

Fireworks were being shot off all night long in our neighborhood which keep us up until early this morning. As a result, being elderly, my wife is very sick today and we have cancelled our holiday week end plans to be with our family.
The local Peru Police Dept. has no excuses and is not excused for their inefficiency. Since they were not occupied with Peru fireworks how could the last week be carried on with no arrests because of fireworks.

The fireworks made your wife sick? That is the fault of the police department? Please. Most of the comments on here are completely absurd.

Yes constant noise can make you sick. Try starting with a headache, leading to a migraine.
If we have an ordinance on the books in Peru, it should be enforced and that order should be given. First a warning and then a fine or get rid of the ordinance.
Some of what I saw this weekend were not sparklers or other small types of typical July 4 fireworks. Kids used to pound on a strip of caps with a rock to make noise and now we allow individuals to set off fireworks that are comparable to what I see at a professional fireworks display. Are they dangerous to the neighbors and if so why are they not controlled. Remember Washington Park and the city fireworks were shut down because of one incident but now it appears it is ok for someone to set them off in their backyard in close distance to many neighbors homes.
I believe the Fire Chief needs to revisit this safety issue.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't the fire chief usually leave town for a personal vacation the day after our city's fireworks? Heard this has happened many times over the last several years. Fireworks, illegal ones or not around the week before and the week after July 4th are in abundance and it would stand to reason that there is a higher chance of a fire starting. So, I agree that the fire chief should be vigilant in safety issues regarding fireworks.

Anonymous said...

I agree the Fire Chief needs to review the ordinance for safety, but we also have a Police Chief/ PW Supt./ some kind of city administrator and who knows what else, he should be directing his Police Dept. to enforce the ordinance. If he is so consumed with the other positions, he should stick with what tax payers pay him for and that is "Police Chief"

I am a local realtor and want the home listings for all of you that are moving out. Enjoy LaSalle or wherever else you move where there are no fireworks. Lol

Anonymous 3:50 PM, July 06,2014 I made a effort to obtain your phone # in the telephone book but find that you are not listed under Anonymous. If you want home listings you will have to be professional and publish your own name.
