Dive in Friday to help save Oglesby pool - LaSalle News Tribune - LaSalle, IL

Listen and learn!

Perhaps if we had done this instead of allowing the Peru swimming pool to be come the first of numerous bits of destruction being done to the city, we might still have one. Kudos to Oglesby residents for taking the lead in doing this for your city and hopefully it will be enough to allow the city to keep the pool open. Elected officials working with local residents can accomplish minor miracles that we are seeing in the Illinois Valley.

I couldn't agree with you more Lois. If Harl had thought like Oglesby and tried saving the pool instead of demolishing it, Peru could still have a pool. I think it was his way of saying he's the mayor. How could the other aldermen allow this to happen? Why didn't somebody stand up and say, no we need to raise funds to save the pool. How far would $100,000 go to fix the pool. That $100,000 was raised basically during the first 2 years of the fundraising efforts.

Now we have 28 to 32 summer helpers getting paid just so Harly can get more votes in April. It's ok to waste money when Harly needs a vote.

Agree with your comments lois but I don't think harl hired the kids. Just being fair. I think the managers, wait a minute, a manager made that decision.

Who decides how many we need and who approves hiring them? I don't recall any of them being approved or voted on by the city council. Why would we need 32 when we hire out the majority of the "work" they did before? I believe we had around 32 when the pool was open which meant life guards, basket kids, and ticket takers. I, as many others, have witnessed kids standing around and riding around doing nothing and with no supervision. Who is in charge of them and who checks to make sure them completed the tasks assigned to them? There wouldn't be complaints if there was supervision and a check and balance system. It has been said that the summer helpers would be able to perform extra projects. Does anyone know what any of those projects were and if they were completed?
