you really need to look at the source. He is part of the Corn Dog Coalition. He is against any kind of development. And he already made his bones in the "Education Industry" up in "The Burbs."

Lois - this is an opinion piece written by an individual that has been on the front lines of the anti-mining campaign from day one. This group does not want any mining in LaSalle County - actually they are against anything that spoils their enjoyment of nature. They don't want mining. To a lesser degree they don't want hydraulic fracturing to be used in this country - but that doesn't happen here so the battle cry is not as loud. Oddly enough, they are also against the local wind turbines, the solar farm, and the Rock Island Clean Line. Essentially, this guy and his friends anti-energy.
Well - we cannot survive as a nation without inexpensive energy. That is a fact. If it means sand mining or even a resurgence of coal mining in LaSalle County - then so be it. That is the role we will play to ensure our economy and our country remain strong.
We need to face the facts that these facilities will exist in our community. We need to work with the companies that are providing this vital product. We also need to understand that nothing will prevent some of the product from escaping and irritating us from time to time. Nothing that is except complete prohibition - which is the goal of folks like Mr. Wheeler.
If it is any consolation - as the price of oil continues to decline due to Saudi Arabia flooding the market - less sand will be required. But - the requirements will fluctuate with the market so don't think it is going away.

I guess my comment did not pass the editorial review.
