Please Share Your Sources for Reading Local News

Last couple of weeks have been very busy for us and this morning I was trying to catch up on local news and along with that I read the Births, Obits and Police Reports occasionally if I have time. From habit, I look online through WLPO, News Tribune and Ottawa Times as my sources and rarely to the BCR.

Much to my amazement today, almost all of the police reports were about Ottawa and a couple of La Salle, Marseilles, Spring Valley and Depue. None that I saw from Peru. A little from the county and the state law enforcement.

So either the local paper is skewing the news or we really do live in the city of milk and honey. Perhaps all the real news is only put in the published paper and if you don't subscribe, tough luck.

What catches my mind is that the paper covered the westclocks fire regarding arson. What about the alleged allegations regarding a peru fireman starting a fire at an apt building. Was there another article besides the first one that reported a fire at the apartment?

Anonymous said...

MMG, WLPO and the NT, are cheerleaders for local government. I think they report Peru police reports on Saturdays only.

Peru Town Forum said...

I guess my point was 'why all the Ottawa police news?" On Oct. 11, there were 12 posts of Ottawa police citations" So I guess if we do ours on Saturday, it should be online tomorrow. Ottawa doesn't seem to reciprocate with our activity or do they.

Anonymous said...

No they don't. Also keep in mind that MMG is making an effort to expand into the Ottawa market. For many, many years, WLPO was understood to mean "W - LaSalle, Peru, Oglesby." They even said it on the air - even back in the Joe Hogan days. Now they say "LaSalle, Peru, Ottawa." and.... by they way, their current morning guy can't hold a candle to Joe Hogan.

MMG?

MMG is Miller Media Group.

You stated:

"So either the local paper is skewing the news or we really do live in the city of milk and honey. Perhaps all the real news is only put in the published paper and if you don't subscribe, tough luck."

Two thoughts:

1. You cherry pick one day for police reports and find that as a way to criticize Peru or give us a newspaper conspiracy? Of course you do.

2. Why don't you subscribe to the paper if you don't like online content? Nearly every newspaper in America limits their online content to nonsubscribers. It is a business after all. Tough luck is right.

It was not one day and yes I can read the Ottawa paper each day online at the present time.

Very little which happens in Peru is entered in the newspapers police reports, which makes many ask why Peru has such a large police force for a town of 10,000. Of course major illegalities, illegal gambling etc,are ignored which would consume man hours if mandated.

lois u don't need to subscribe to the news tribune if you want to read a article go to google and type the exact title of the article followed by news tribune ta da u read it for free try it

Anonymous said...

It is very difficult to understand how some laws can be enforced but others ignored. This is why you get very little newspaper coverage.
Also when the area media ignores a complete form of coverage they will shy away from investigative reporting also. Most likely your newspaper has 2 pages of local news, 4 pages of sports and 5 pages of advertising.

I read newspapers from all the major cities in Illinois - or at least as much as they let me for free. I also read a variety of other web pages such as the Daily Illini and the Illinois News Network.
There is a lot of news that never makes the Chicago news and definitely never makes the News Tribune.
For instance, did you know about the attacks on the Champaign-Urbana campus this weekend? It was reported in the Daily Illini.

"The Champaign Police Department is investigating a string of batteries that occurred at various locations in the campus area on Saturday, October 11, 2014.Between 3:30 a.m. and 4:10 a.m. there were four similar incidents where individuals (5 victims) who were walking in the campus area were approached and battered for no apparent reason. Based on the circumstances, it is possible that all victims were battered by the same group of suspects. In one incident, the suspects exited two vehicles, battered the victim and left the area in the vehicles. In the other cases it appears the suspects were walking together in a group just prior to battering the victims. During some of these encounters, the suspects would ask the victim for an item or verbalize general threats just prior to the battery. One victim had a cell phone taken..."

6:29 - I'm guessing you edited your version to remove the racial aspect. The Daily Illini used to include that in their reporting. This happened all the time when I was at U of I. A bunch of black guys (we always assumed as part of a gang initiation) would jump a lone white kid walking home from the bars at night. One of my fraternity brothers was beaten unconscious.

Anonymous said...

And the Champagne-Urbana campus is one of the largest gun free zones in the state of Illinois. Thanks for the info on the Daily Illini - pretty good paper, complete with a crime section. The latest news, there was a robbery at a campus ATM machine Sunday afternoon.
I'd think twice about sending my kids to live on that campus.

Speaking of media reporting. I know a father whose daughter and her boyfriend were murdered in a park in Oklahoma. Both were first year college students at ORU (Oral Roberts University). This should have been reported on the news channels. I won't go into detail about this crime and the two indicted suspects. You can read the story on the internet. I have no idea why the Martin case in Florida received so much coverage compared to the story I just explained. We all know it's up to the bosses what gets covered in newspapers and what doesn't. Most people are disappointed in our local paper and it's reporting. Now, how glad and appreciative we should be of this blog site and thankful to Lois for all her time, and to all those who participate. And to all of those that don't like this forum, I have to wonder why? Could it be that it's because there is a lot of truth being said? Hummmmmm!

I see in tonight's paper that our fire department has a new dog that was at the open house over the weekend. Does this dog belong to the taxpayers? Are our taxes being used to train this dalmation dog? Feeding it? vet bills? With full-time city employees at the station 24/7. Can't dalmation be very aggressive? Dalmatians as a whole do not have a great track record. Wouldn't this be a safety issue and an insurance liability? I'm not a crabby old man, being as I have animals myself, but it seems as if we have other things at the fd that should take precedents. Who is the owner of this dog? The paper did make it sound as if the fd is? Can all city departments have a dog?

Anonymous said...

No news about the new IVCC Faculty contract. Just a snippet on WLPO about a strike being averted.

Anonymous said...

Only people on this blog can turn a harmless question into a potential conspiracy of dalmations. Get a life

Anonymous said...

A of DS here. I am not sure if every department can have a dog, but with a little luck and some strong support from the Mayor, it is only a matter of time , IF he is re-elected, that EVERY department will have at least one deer.

I want to thank Mr. Vickrey, the Illinois Lobbyist, our Advertising website, and the rec committee for their hard work and support with the adopt a deer program.

If we continue to welcome the deer, and keep getting rid of all the businesses and leveling the land, it is only a matter of time until all the country recognizes us as the deer spotting capital of the Midwest. If I had even a small part to play in this, I am humbled and grateful.

Anonymous said...

With all do respect to the fd Dalmatian pup, I think a dog has no business being in a public place, nor should my tax dollars be used for this animal if that happens to be the case, nor should a fd city employee be on the clock on our tax money to provide care. Does city hall have an animal running around? Does this Dalmatian belong to a fireman? The newspaper picture and article did make it seem as if the fd /city owns dog.

Anonymous said...

I think we should have an official firehouse cat. Why should dogs get all the publicity? Cats actually work for a living. Dogs just eat, bark, and poop.
I demand that the FD adopt a Cat!

Anonymous said...

Since cats work for a living they would be non promo table in the administrative chain of command in the city. Hard working just does not fit in.

Anonymous said...

It's pretty sad when all the other problems within our city, the focus is on a Dalmatian pup, this makes the blog look foolish.

Anonymous said...

Pierce is Jeff King's personal dog. The city is not paying for it.

Anonymous said...

It's official, Peru has "Gone to the Dogs". It is especially appropriate that Peru have a Dalmation as its mascot. That breed is known for its poor vision, stubborn-ness, and a tendancy to bit the hand that feeds it. Just like the phony elected officials of Peru.
How appropriate.

Anonymous said...

6:56 A of BS.

You complain about business not coming or leaving Peru and at the same time you complain about the those working to help our local economy. Not everybody spends their days sitting in a deer stand waiting for the famous four pointer. Your humor about deer is in the category of "needs special help", please get some real work and help our local business.

Anonymous said...

Here we go again, bloggers assuming the city is wasting tax payers money on a dog without any type of confirmation, you make yourselves look bad!

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not a smart idea to have a dalmation dog around children. Maybe the city needs to look into an insurance policy covering dogs that could bit on city property being as the animal was promoted as a fd dog. Let's get a new peru holiday, "bring a dog to work day." Don't forget, animals are not allowed at Baker Lake.

Anonymous said...

Oh no! Somebody invoked the "its for the children" reasoning. Personally, I'm of the school of thought that if you never get bit, you never learn.

Anonymous said...

when "it is for the children" is mentioned, I stop listening. That generally means that somebody from a government body is going to try to pick my pocket.
As far as the dog goes - give it a break. Even if the FD "owns" the mongrel, the cost is minimum and it is traditional. People really need to lighten up.

Anonymous said...

@9:57, read 4:35's comment! And please comprehend it, meaning what the comment actually says. The blogger asked if the dog belonged to the taxpayers? It also asked who own the dog? 9:57, I wonder if you read the article and saw the picture in the paper? You must not have been able to comprehend the reporting regarding the dog, and the reasoning why a taxpayer would have a question . And all of us who pay taxes have every right to question how our taxes are spent and on what. Why 9:57 was your comment so defensive towards an intelligent question of a blogger?

Anonymous said...

The most popular posts in recent days is the guardrail and the puppy at the fire station. I cant wait for the xmas parade and if Santa will look authentic or not.

We have a few people who read the news and wonder why the neighbor's name isn't in the news for running a stop sign. They prefer to read the newspaper in another county. That makes sense?

As you may be aware. We have a local resident running for Governor of the State and nobody has mentioned the opportunities our area has if Mr.Perez is elected. Its about time we get behind him and get ready for change in Illinois.

Anonymous said...

I'm from the old school, not to take chances in someone possibly getting hurt by a dog bite. My nephew got bit by a family dog, and had to go to the emergency room. He was playing with the dog and the dog bit him for no reason. I think the question were legitiment ones that have been asked. So, now we know the dog won't be kept at the fire station being cared for by paid city employees on the clock also. It is a cute puppy, owners of dalmations should newer take their eyes off them when the dog is around other people, especially children. Look up the breed and you will understand.

Anonymous said...

Read anon 8:26. 4:35 it's called paranoia!!!!

Anonymous said...

How can we be sure that people that own a dog actually are reliable and can take care of them properly and be safe with them. Animals are dangerous and people should be required to have a permit to own them....

:) ha ha ha. Just kidding. But they should be required to pay a hefty dog tax. :)

Anonymous said...

12:04 Your correct a dog could bite your nephew. Did you know that if you leave your home you could be struck by a spaceship? And at anytime this puppy could turn into CUJO of the famed Steven King novels. Lets just say that the little puppy came to hang out at the station to entertain a few little kids, that's all there is to this. Little Pierce isn't going to take any wages away from anyone. He won't eat the prime rib stored in the freezer and he won't be on the city payroll, health insurance or retirement. He wont cry if he doesn't get in the firefighters promotional photos in the Newstrib. Lighten up it was a nice gesture to bring the little Pierce to the station.

8:53 A of DS here. I do not see how my compliments could be considered complaints. Over the years no one has been more positive in Peru than me.

And If you think deer are humorous, well then I feel sorry for you. They are as serious as any animal I spot.

As a matter of fact, they are more challenging to spot than the North American Jackass. But I hear there is a club forming to spot them here because there is a rare wild herd of them near the river.

12:34 go to Alderman Rodney's Perez facebook page and you will see candidate Perez discuss his campaign for the state' highest office. His video is posted above the photo of Rodney and Mayor Harl holding guns in the basement of city hall. I wonder if they have began a militia force in Peru? A of DS should be excited about the new militia force in the basement of city hall.

back to the point of this topic - stuff in the news paper.

Nice in-depth reporting in the NT this afternoon concerning leaves. Apparently the fall in the fall. Who would of thunk? There is a lot of detail about how each of our local communities are dealing with this calamity. But, it looks like a lot of work. I prefer to burn them if I can sit there and drink beer while I watch the fire. Otherwise, I do nothing with them. Eventually, they just blow down the road. I like nature to take care of natural things. No sense me getting involve. Unless there is an opportunity to build a fire an drink beer of course.... :)
I'm glad we have reporting like this to keep us in the know.

2:33 A of DS here. As you know , our sport uses no firearms, which is unfortunate as our area has so many gun clubs, indoor and outdoor ranges, ammo shops, bars and tattoo parlors that South Carolina has filed to annex us. Just try and find a decent deer slapping stick though. Thank goodness for Amazon.

But my comment is that I think it unwise for Alderman Perez and Mayor Harl to ever be armed and in the same room. Unless there is a steel guardrail between them . Or the kid catcher posts on the baker lake path. Or maybe the state of Iowa.

Big breaking news in the NT this morning! It seems that a famous political reporter from CHICAGO is in Putnam County doing a story about politics and needed to talk to some real "down staters." Wow! I haven't heard anything this exciting since Bill Murray stopped at Casey's General Store for a hot dog and a diet coke.
Remember everyone, it is expected for he yokels to bow or curtsy when approached by a member of the Chicago media elite. If you are not sure, it is acceptable to bow to anyone from Chicago.

Anonymous said...

Dear A of DS,

You can now find the slapping sticks at Washington Park!!

Anonymous said...

Now A of DS. You can't paint firearms owners in such a broad stroke. If you want to turn them into a demographic group, they would overwhelmingly fall in the upstanding citizen category. Remember the old Honda advertisement? "You meet the nicest people on a Honda." The same can be said for pistols, gun shops and target ranges.... "The nicest people own a Smith & Wesson."

Anonymous said...

A of BS... I like the idea of a festival called Deer Slapping Day. We could sell deer slapping sticks, serve deer jerky, deer beer and have a parade. And the local kids gun club headquartered in city hall could have a shooting contest at the local park. The winner would get a shotgun for deer season. We would call off school, actually no kid goes to school during deer season. We would call off football season, actually LP had called off football season in August. Lets get the community humming about this new holiday.

Anonymous said...

Why would someone from Chicago come to the area for a news story. We have no politicians under investigation by the FBI, we have no illegal gambling, and we all have our political signs up for the re-election of our leaders. I bet they are investigating the leaves and how the colors change in the fall. Or maybe we will be given a award for the area with the largest consumption of alcohol beverages in the country. Maybe they are just giving the Chicago readers a example of how a community works without the corruption of politics?

Anonymous said...

Ambassador of Deer Spotting, please do not hire Connecting Point to provide video survellience service for your scouting purposes. It seems that they have a terrible history of their equipment working properly. I suggest you buy your own camera from the new store opening called Durhams. If your purchased camera is faulty, you can return it, with no questions asked. That's the city's motto. And of course, you know to never buy that same camera again. Happy Slapping.

OOPS, you wont see a Quinn sign in my yard! My mistake.

I agree 5:41. The corner of 251 and Shooting Park was always a controversial one. I even remember one time when all signs were removed (even those advertising charitable events). Today, and lately it (and the triangle at Peoria and Plank road) is a mess. As one alderman commented some time ago "it's not attractive".

Anonymous said...

@5:41, you are politically correct. Or if certain people don't like certain people because their cover has been blown, then the sign ordinance could be enforced, so I've been told. If a sign ordinance isn't being adhered to, what's the standard operating procedure that the city takes? Who is code enforcer?

Anonymous said...

Bob,

Thanks for your American freedom note. If you want to have a basement of guns in your home, that's ok. If you want to put up posters of Ollie North in your garage that's ok. If you want to watch Fox News all day long, that's ok. But, please have some consideration for your neighbors when it comes to the yard signs, yard birds or garbage in the front yard. Did you know that you have both Long and Mautino signs? They are running against each other. I have been looking for the Perez for Gov. signs and haven't been able to find any. Do you have one of those in your yard?

Anonymous said...

Not attractive but the only transparency in the present Peru. Maybe it would be best to take 2 weeks of every year and allow all the signs to be posted that anyone wants including everything from nudity, insanity and possibly something as taboo as "No Bid".

Anonymous said...

the multiple signs spelich has in yards is ridiculous-probably in with harl and the gang.

Anonymous said...

9:36 and 10:02 - the yard sing issue is not a local one. The US Supreme Court ruled that they are protected free speech. Municipalities can regulate the number of signs and the size of signs - at least that is the thought, it has never been tested in a court.
Our own Governor Quinn singed a law in 2012 that states you can have signs in your yard 365 days a year as long as there is political content. So, if you don't like abortion, you can post pictures of dead babies. If you are a in the KKK, you can post a political sign declaring your support of segregation. All perfectly legal.
I for one desire to have yard signs abolished all together. I support the first amendment and the other nine amendments in the bill of rights. But abolishing yard signs is no different than restricting how, when, and were I am allowed to carry my pistol.

Basement full of guns and ammo. CHECK
Poster of Ollie North. CHECK
Fox news. CHECK.
Respect for my neighbors, CHECK only have one sign for each candidate on either street side of my house.
Mautino and Long signs. CHECK
Will take one down when I decide which one I will vote for. Probably take down the Mautino sign, he has helped run this state into the ground with government union contracts in exchange for reelection votes for years. May be time to give another hack a chance to do the same thing.
One thing you wont see in my yard is a Perez sign. Remember this is the guy who went to the LP basketball game with a 18" tall afro with Christmas lights in it.
And he is Rodney's brother, which is probably a bigger problem for me than what Chico did in the 70's.

Peru does a terrible job of telling people what the rules are. If people know what the rules are, they generally follow them.
I for one hate the garage sale singes also. Then there are the signs attached to telephone poles, stop signs, and in the right of way. All illegal.
Then there are the business sings. Like the creepy waving figure powered by a fan at the automobile dealerships or the big 1% financing balloon. Those should be illegal.
How about the charity event sings all over the place? You know, the ones that you need a magnifying glass to read but the Miller Light can is visible from six blocks away...
All of this signage needs to be regulated. Including the ugly school LED signs that are a waste of money.

Anonymous said...

If I thought he had a chance, I'd vote for Chico. But, it is more important to get Quinn out. So I will hold my nose and vote for Rauner.
We absolutely need to get Quincometax, Lap Dog Mautino, and Sack of Durbin out of office! Hold our nose and vote against these guys. Then, hold the replacement's nose to the grindstone.
