Illinois’ true unemployment rate: 18.1 percent

Illinois’ true unemployment rate: 18.1 percent

A pause for concern or a great exaggeration.

This is true. The rate reported in the news is a rate based on people actively looking for work - aka those collecting unemployment insurance. Once you use up your unemployment, you are no longer counted as being in the workforce.
The rate in LaSalle County is very much higher that what the NT and WLPO have been reporting. Maybe closer to 25%.
Remember this on next Tuesday when you vote.

Why don't they have this information on the news? I was listening to the wlpo the other day and they where talking about how things are getting better in the Illinois valley because the unemployment rate was so low. This was right after a Mautino commercial by the way. Just saying.

Did you know that inexpensive RFID tags can be used to make the checkout counter obsolete in most stores? Imagine going to the grocery store, filling your basket with food, bagging it yourself, and walking out the door. Billing would be accomplished to a preselected credit card or account and your individual credentials would be on your smart phone or key chain. No baggers or check out person required.

Just saying, please read the newspaper. Everyday there are jobs for warehousing, many openings in manufacturing, and retail. Food service, sanitation and many other jobs are open. Those are just a few that will hire without qualifications. Or you can do what many do, that is continue to collect unemployment and complain when that dries up after 99 weeks!

It must be known what question you are asking the answer for? Do you want the actual per cent of the population that are drawing a unemployment check, or do you want the per cent that are drawing a unemployment check and the per cent who are capable of working but for some reason are not added together which is in round figures presently 25% in Illinois.
So much can be answered correctly and incorrectly depending on who is doing the answering and how they want to answer your questions.

Minimum wage job can't support just one person who is working full-time. This in no way means a person is lazy. Our system is messed up. At $10 an hour, gross would be $800 bi-weekly. Net income? $650-$675. That would possibly just pay for one months rent. That's 2 weeks of work. Now consider all the utilities, cell phone cable, food, personal items, cleaning supplies, gasoline, vehicle, insurance, dental, medical. Makes me sick. No wonder there are so many welfare recipients. Somebody has to perform these jobs whereas the wages are terrible. The United States is going to become a country where several family's live under one roof, mark my word, it's already happening.

To be fair, the rate reported in the news is the same formula used nationwide. This is usually distinguished from the underemployment rate, which is a different number and the one I think we should use. But the NT and WLPO are using the same figures that are used in all other regions, states and nationwide. Stop making it sound like a conspiracy theory.

3:04 you also cannot add these numbers together and come up with 25 percent. One out of every four people in Illinois is not unemployed and looking for work. Those drawing an unemployment check have NOTHING to do with the calculation referenced in the news for the unemployment rate.

Minimum wage jobs are ENTRY LEVEL. They are not meant to support a family. They are historically taken by people with no experience or skills - aka high school and college kids.

I see that Flimflam the Organ Man is at it again, mesmerizing school officials with sounds from the "priceless" boat anchor called "the organ." I'm somewhat encouraged that they are not talking about using "health and safety" funds to pay the pipe fixer. However, regardless of the source, there are much better things that we can spend $400K on. In the words of the Music Man, we got real trouble here in River City. We don't need more Flimflam men from Chicago bilking us out of our hard earned money. We elect enough of them as it is.

The October 20 council meeting video is now on the city website. You can watch the resident speak about his problem with the city.

Seems like a sink hole has appeared in another residents yard on meadow lawn . How will the city handle this as one homeowner has been told to sue the city already. Will Mr Schweickert advis the same.

No matter what one thinks or which statistic is used no one knows how devastating it can be until you are included.

my financial advisor said that the recommended cash reserves for the average person has been increased to one year of take home pay.

The video from the last council meeting is now available on line. It's the one where the resident was told by the attorney to get a lawyer and makes for interesting viewing.

The city should not pay. Good call by the council.

Lois - check out the Illinois News Network. They have an article about the IML conference and how many cities handled the expenses. The article title is:

Municipal conference attendees spend more than $1k to learn tight budget techniques

The city should pay. And will when it's shown that it is in fact a city issue. Go up and look for urselves. Funny how a new sewer line is going in on meadowlawn. Cover them tracks Boss Harl.

5:41 Why do you feel the city should not pay? Do you know the facts? Read the minutes from the Public Services where the city admits they made a mistake and pretty much admits it was their fault and on the city side of the property.

2:54 - FYI, unemployment is only 26 weeks in Illinois.

Anon 9:27 Unemployment compensation is 26 weeks in Illinois. Unemployment can be a lot longer than 26 weeks and normally is.

I think the Federal Government extended that out to 99 weeks - that law may be expired though.... not sure. Don't want to find out.

FYI.looks like the 2nd resident with a sink hole on meadowlawn had a new sewer line installed in their front yard today. This seems to have been done by the contractor working on the ongoing sewer replacement on meadowlawn. How is this possible? Who authorized this work? Who pays for this? Coincidentally it looks very similar to the other homeowner that was in a dispute with the city over sewer backup.

Illinois stopped the federal extension past 26 weeks. Call the unemployment office.
