Rainbow Flower planted in Allen Park - The Times: Local

Fantastic idea for developing art in a park, congratulations Ottawa for encouraging this display and more.

I really like the way the Ottawa mayor thinks. A community is so much more than streets and sewers, although those are very important. It's art, flowers, music and festivals for all ages that make a town a community.

You do understand! And I agree whole heatedly.

Just drove through Ottawa last week. The downtown is beautiful!!

If all of you are so infatuated with Ottawa, then why don't you move there? All you do is complain about everything that Peru is doing wrong and other communities are doing right, therefore the choice should be clear! Move away!

If there were any leaders in this fair city, they would look at those comments and take them as a challenge and look at what they are doing wrong and start asking what is right for the community? You 10:08 PM are part of the problem and what many of those in control feel and maybe too many residents are taking your comment to heart and packing their bags and family and moving to other
cities.
Remember when all the Catholic churches had schools and each city ward had a public grade school and now we are going to have one public school (Northview) for the entire city and one Catholic school.
This shows a no growth city and until the people in charge want to make this a city people want to move to and stay, it will continue declining and no one is listening. Hear the crickets.
Don't blame the bloggers, blame yourself.

What I feel Peru lacks are leaders who care about the people who make up this town. It seems as though unless you're a business person or have connections somewhere you're voice is silenced. If you speak up or question you're labeled trouble. I have been to meetings where the mayor visits and speaks to some individuals in the audience and avoids others completely. He has also been rude to certain individuals as has some of the aldermen. In my opinion for a town to succeed all should be treated as equal. I can even see that our mayor tends to favor certain aldermen and avoids others. People have volunteered in Peru and have never even been given a thank you for their efforts. How can one be proud of their town when those who run it don't seem to care about the individuals who compromise it?

Some people offer their services and are ignored because of their views. If you advocate fiscal restraint or voice any conservative views, you will not be appointed to any board or commission. If you oppose cronyism, you will not be appointed to any board or commission. If you speak truth to power, you will not be appointed to any board or commission.

You might get appointed but everyone on that board or commission will ignore you and you will feel ostracized and most of the time they will not even acknowledge your time spent as a volunteer. It happened last night at the council meeting.

I've been hearing over and over again that Sunday's concert was a success. I'm glad but what I want to know is "a success for who"? We gave time, money, manpower, land, etc. and got what in return?

Unfortunately, many of our local "business leaders" view government at all levels as a revenue source. The only thing they care about schools, the cities, the county, and the state is the ability to spend. We cannot sustain an economy like this.
If you advocate for Peru to cut back on spending, you upset many powerful people in this City. People that own businesses that are kept afloat through government spending. People that have names you know and who have been doing business for many generations. People that owe their station in life to sucking the taxpayer dry. Come on - look in your high school year book, you can pick out the names.
That is the caliber of people that run Peru. Be it "business leaders" or "political leaders" for the most part they have figured out how to tap the government spending keg and have been getting drunk on our taxes for generations. No serious reform advocate has a chance around here. Even Rodney will be ousted when the silent rulers - those that pull Harl's strings - front their own candidate.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:20 You seem to have a very good understanding of Peru's business and political leaders and their methods. What are you actively doing to oppose? Are you fronting Rodney or your own candidate or are you simply sitting back as another "I told you so". When was the last time you spoke to a city official to compliment or complain or simply express yourself about a political issue? Do you believe that your representation is doing a good job is so have you told them if not are you actively approaching others to band together and back someone you believe would do a good job? Next spring our greatest opportunity for political expression will be available by means of a vote. Now is not too early to prepare!

Anonymous said...

10:20 Your on a roll with these quick witted comments about Peru? It must be time for your election run. Who are these powerful people that need Peru tax money to keep rolling? Most of the local business has no tax money and sell no products to the city of Peru, LaSalle or anybody else. And what is this call for reform? Is it the Unions, the schools, business? Most of my taxes go toward the education system, very little for the city. Is it the library books that you want reform? Who pulls the strings and how does it effect your quality of life in wherever you live? Do you call reform by voting to have the fireworks in a residential neighborhood? etc, etc, etc? Are these leaders tapping the government with inflated salaries? Post the salaries of your city elected, township elected, school boards, and more. Tell us who is getting drunk at the benefit of your tax dollars.

Don't be too fooled. Scott is only lead to believe he still has supporters such as myself. I like many others play the game because we have to. Perez has more support in this town then it may appear. Scott's been working tiressly to end Perez' term. He tried convincing my neighbor to run against Perez and he told Scott he liked the job Perez is doing. Scott even offered to fund his campaign.
Scott thinks I don't like Perez either but what I do behind the ballot curtain is no ones business. Seems hypocritical of me but as above mentioned I'm a business owner and need whoever is mayor to be on my side.

Anonymous said...

10:20 AM has a very good understanding of "The Peru Way" of doing business. I agree 100%.

11:41 PM is in denial and takes offense when somebody hits the "sweet spot" by telling it like it is. I can't speak for 10:20but I will tell you that I have had face to face conversations with the mayor and three different aldermen about my opposition to No-Bid contract given to TEST. All of my concerns fell on deaf ears. In fact, one of the aldermen got all excited, puffed up his chest and got in my face in an attempt to intimidate me. I was not intimidated and that bothered him even more. My point is that in my opinion, most of the current crew of Peru elected officials, from aldermen to clerk to treasurer to mayor, are so lacking in any sense of how to lead or even what they are supposed to be doing for the people of Peru. So I actively support anyone who has the courage to challenge this current group of "know-nothings". That's what I have done and that's what I will continue to do. So 11:41 AM, what do you do other than criticize those of us who criticize them.

Anonymous said...

Lois, who was ostracized at the meeting and what committee are they on?

Anonymous said...

12:44 fun attempt at humor. You know that no one is working to get rid of your favorite and THE Mayor wouldn't reach out to anybody or fund a campaign. Your friend Scott has his hands full.

Anonymous said...

Alderman Potthoff was such a disappointment to me with the TEST vote. I thought for sure he would side with the right way of doing things, but instead he went along with the status quo. I have 3 votes in the 4th ward, and I will be watching the upcoming election very closely.

Anonymous said...

1:04 You went from your comment about business leaders being corrupt to the city leadership. More conspiracy about this TEST contract. What did the Mayor and the three Alderman tell you? Can you give us some real details? And who was going to knock you out? Should they listen to you as a result of your expertise in the field? Why didn't you charge the official with intimidation?

Peru Town Forum said...

2:02 PM

Your attempt at humor wasn't funny. The mayor knows all about funding campaigns against those he doesn't like and he knows how to get others to do the dirty work too. Believe me he is well experienced.

Anonymous said...

2:12- u r a joke. Charge them with intimidation. That's like saying, charge them with slander. Do u ever hear of a slander lawsuit? I never have in my 53 years on this earth. Probably the reason why is the person is telling the truth, and the person who talks the big talk saying they were slandered knows it's the truth. So they would look like an idiot filing suit and ever more people would know the truth about them. Always take a step back, think, ask yourself questions, ask honest people for honest answers, and there will lye the truth.

Anon 2:02 Harl helped fund Alderman Mike Sapienza along with getting 150 to endorse Sap. It's too bad that FBI calling wasn't done prior to the mayoral election because if so Mile Hart would be mayor today. Anyone who Harl endorses from here on out is mud. Alderman Rodney Perez ruined Harls political future.

Anonymous said...

4:18 PM, I know Harl also got 150 behind Lukosus to beat Weberski in the 4th ward last election. How's that for treating the guy who helped get Harl elected? Harl stabbed Weberski in the back. That shows Harl's character, along with fudging timesheets to get an employee a raise. Harl may not have benefitted financially from that raise, but I betcha he got a vote for it!

Anonymous said...

Anon 4:18, or ruined his own chances!

Anonymous said...

Although the Mayors election is just short of 3 years away isn't it very probable that Mayor Harl will not run again. When running for his first term as Mayor he was a very open proponent of term limitations.
Knowing when and with whom to flood the field with can swing a election in ones favor.
What could force the Mayors election to have a primary election? Many say that 5 candidates would make a primary necessary. Is this true?
Last election had 4 candidates so 5 is not inconceivable.

Could a political party or individual candidate be the recipient of a concert for a cause? Could they produce their own concert at the airport? By now those active in Peru politics the last 5 years would have the know how and all the ins and outs.
One concert at the airport would make several golf outings look like small potatoes.

Anonymous said...

All summer long I hear of city sponsored events for families. LaSalle, Spring Valley, Ladd, Lostant, Wenona, Oglesby, Marsailles, Ottawa, Streator etc. all have at least one event if not more but Peru really has nothing in comparison. The concerts are produced by a private individual. Why doesn't Peru have events similar to the other towns mentioned?

Anonymous said...

Political parties have no place in small town city elections.

I am with you 100% but Mayor Scott Harl and the aldermen don't seem to have any interest in doing anything for the people who live here. As for the concerts, I am trying to keep my thoughts to myself because what they will be bringing to the airport on August 16 is going to be like nothing we have ever seen there. Well I will only be hearing about from those who attend. My suggestion is look at La Grotto's FB page and check out the bands and acts she will be having. One of them is the Suicide Girls which I would like to have the people in Peru check out for themselves on You Tube and it is evident that the Mayor and Council don't check out what she brings to the airport before giving her the approval. It is getting close to embarrassing to tell people you live in Peru because of the lack of integrity we currently have in office.

Peru Town Forum said...

10:03 PM

And neither do unions.

Anonymous said...

And Harl is both a member of 150 and a part of the leadership of the LaSalle County Democrat Party.

Anonymous said...

Lois, they are just names of bands, that's all ! Your generation got all bent out of shape with Elvis in the 50's, then the 60's had the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Byrds, etc, the 70's came with Black Sabbath, Judist Priest. I could go on and on, and the previous generation would think that the current generation is out of control. So don't get to hung up on the bands name, it's just that!!

12 11 Do we need to post lyrics from the songs as well?

Two Ex Catholics university students sent the Bishop Kid Rock Lyrics full of mysogyny and degredation. I saw the letter. But they did nothing, took the money. Just had two young adults see the hypocrisy and leave their raised religion.

Free Speech is free speech, but dont try to sugar coat these bands or their music that the city is sponsoring. Stand up behind them. Dont cry , oh you all were the same with Elvis and rock and roll.

These bands draw more Molly users and a wider variety of drug use, and where there is a market, there will be sales. You should have seen the Flying J parking lot and The Gas station north of the Utica Exit for KR, AJ and this last one. And before you say you should call the police...they did. Plenty.

You cant stop it. Country and Hard Rock Concerts are drug malls. I personally only get po'd at the "holier than tho, it never happens here" attitude of the Valley and Miller Media. Make the crap legal and get rid of the phony preachers and Principals who beg at the Concert bootstraps.

Anonymous said...

Did the news tribune ever report about the 19 year old who got so drunk he had to be transported out of the concert in an ambulance? Did they report about the 5 car incident? Or did they just sugar coat the whole concert and only show the good things?

Anonymous said...

It won't be any more of a drunk fest than the last one was. The problem is that the government is involved. Government should not be in the entertainment business.

Need to stick to the real problem - it is not the selection of the act, it is the fact that the event is happening at all.

They could have an Lawrence Welk and it would be just as bad.

Anonymous said...

The last time I looked, 19 year olds are not allowed to drink. Has this person been arrested? Illinois Law stipulates that "Any person under age 21 who receives court supervision for the possession, consumption, purchase, or receipt of alcoholic beverages will receive a 3-month suspension of driving privileges." They do not have to be in a driving related offense to have their license suspended. Will the City prosecute this individual?
Will the vendor be fined or have their liquor license suspended? Will the person's insurance expect the vendor and the city to pay for the treatment that was required due to illegal activities?

Anonymous said...

You have to be kidding us 3:56? From what I hear the judicial system is based on who knows who, and how much money one can hand over. I could blog recent news reports regarding this but I won't. Also, watch the news at 10 o'clock regularly. Watch trials. Do a survey of people who have had the same offense and ask them what their verdict was. Chances are many will have different punishments. And some have to appear in court and some don't. I could go on forever.

Anonymous said...

356 This was a pre existing condition. Concerts for a Cause is for kids. They do not serve alcohol to underage kids or tolerate any illegal drug use.
There are no fights and no one is over served alcohol.
The promoter is therefor not responsible for any activities or young people getting into trouble. The Newspaper helps promote these good concerts and is not going to say negative things, because they are perfect and do not need to do things like other places where bad people go to concerts and do bad things. Nothing bad can happen here, the FAA said so. More money comes to the Airport and that is all they care about, and they are all good so be happy. Everyone please just be happy and stop complaining and let these things continue and let our alderpersons keep supporting them and making everybody happy. This is Peru. Not a bad place. Our airport is perfect. Kristy is the bad complainer that everyone should not like. Complainers are bad. She should be very happy, like everyone else. Please be happy, Peru people. Happy happy happy. Stop blogging any problems. It makes you look foolish, not like us happy people. We are not fools. We are happy happy happy.
We should rename Peru happy place.

No, better yet, Happy Place for a Cause.

I think many of us would disagree that there won't be that many drunks but maybe there will be more drugs than drunks, who knows. People have stated that more likely drugs.
And with that in mind, does Ms Noonan have an on site medical help station because sometimes minutes wasted make a difference in life or death.
Sometimes prevention is a good thing. Or is she depending on the ambulance that will be on standby at the airport, you know the the service that Peru pays $5000 per mo. to maintain.
Come to think of it, she could not have these concerts anywhere than the airport because she needs the help of every department in the city and we do it with a smile and a checkbook.

Anonymous said...

Lois, Kristy, other bloggers, how is it going as far as stopping these concerts, it shows how much the city, Ms. Noonan and many, many people pay attention to you, same could happen in the up coming election.

Anonymous said...

6 39 I know Ms. Noonan pays attention to these blogs and Kristy's blog. Very carefully.
Just ask her employees at the shop, after they have been drinking a little lol.
I don't think politically these concerts are unpopular at all, so I doubt anyone running will ever try to stop them.

Anonymous said...

10:54 - that is until somebody gets seriously hurt or killed. Then, all the stuffed shirts on the council will act outraged that the City would allow events like this on public property.
