Date Change for Peru Fireworks

I see the NT also has something about the city talking to the railroad. Are they finally taking suggestions from the public?

"Due to high waters, dangerous current" - this is the first published reason that the city has admitted to that Water Street is too dangerous of a location to conduct the fireworks.
The Illinois River is always deep enough to drown in and there is always current, especially undercurrent which has taken many life's. Combine this with the darkness of night when the fireworks take place and you have created some of the unsafest conditions for the safety of children and adults.
Again I thank the present decision makers in their decision and am looking forward to the Labor Day relocation of the fireworks.

Could have had them at Baker Lake

Or the airport

we should join with LaSalle and use their new Rotary Park.

Why don't the city fathers ask Mary to stage the fireworks at her farm in Dalzell? Ideal location if she wouldn't charge to much.
This shouldn't be a difficult decision by either the city officials or her as both parties have a long term successful relationship at the airport?

Cancel the fireworks in Peru altogether! They scare animals to death and are duplicated in every city so that they become a waste of taxpayers money. Everybody but LaSalle has them.

Why cant we just have a band concert in Washington Park along with an Ice Cream Social? Maybe a parade. I don't see why we need to cater to the folks that like to swill beer and watch explosions.

Anonymous said...

I've also been seeing that the explosions that are part of fireworks are difficult for war veterans to handle.

8:05 Not everybody likes to swill beer. There is a band concert Saturday at Maudes. Ice cream socials went out of fashion with the invention of soft ice cream. Good luck with the ice cream social, square dance ideas.

The only successful events involve beer and gambling. That is the way of life in The Illinois Valley. If beer and gambling is not involved, the crowd will go elsewhere. Therefore, we should not hold these events.
Heck - just put up the beer tent on Water Street. I bet they would not even care if the fireworks went off or not.
Face it. LaSalle, Peru, Oglesby, Spring Valley is populated by Hillbillies.

You folks down in the sticks need to come up to the city. We have multiple fireworks events for your viewing pleasure. I read this blog everyday and am amazed that you people can stay down there in the hinterlands without going insane. Come up north and get some culture for Pete's sake. Face it, everything South of I-80 and West of I-55 is a vast empty land when it comes to sophisticated cultural activities and PROPERLY educated people.

Anon 2:00 PM Thank you, Explosions are very hard to handle and increase and decrease in difficulty at different time and by how many and how close together. They are difficult to handle when set off in the neighborhood and when they awake one at night. If the laws were enforced one would not have to suffer through this yearly. What is fun for one is freighting to others.

That's right 3:37 invite us to the city where the EDUCATED people can shoot us for no reason at all.

6:17. We are working on that. All we need to do to eliminate GUN violence is outlaw GUNS! It's you people down state that are causing the GUN VIOLANCE in Chicago. If it was not for you, there would be NO GUNS in CHICAGO! And that is a proven FACT!!!!!!

Instead of complaining , let's organize a good old fashion Fourth of July parade family events, let's work at doing something instead of beating up everyone about it. All it takes is a small group to make a chance and once it catches on it will grow. Any one in?

9:49 you are a disgrace to humanity blaming downstate people for your lack of respect for human life.

Anonymous said...

I believe the facts 9:49 is referring to is that there are very few instances of smuggled illegal weapons used in metro violence. Almost all originated as legally purchased handguns and semi automatic weapons that were purchased by law abiding responsible gun owners , then sold or stolen and at some point trafficked illegally from that point on.
There are very few smuggled, illegally manufactured, or personally built firearms used in major metro violence.
Arguments in favor of firearms ownership rarely include strict cradle to grave registration, liability and responsibility. There is far to much fear of government and paranoia among gun owners to allow tight registration and control. It will never happen.
Still, blaming downstate gun enthusiasts is somewhat ridiculous, as there are not state checkpoints at all the highways and byways coming in to Metro Chicago. But Gun ownership as a right is not balanced by gun ownership as a responsibility in this country. Just one gun (and sword and knife) owners opinion:)

Hennepin had a full day of activities planned for today followed by fireworks and that town is much smaller than Peru. I agree with 8:13. It would just take one small enthusiastic group to get it going in Peru.

You are right but we also need some help from the elected officials. At least as much as they give Concerts for a Cause. There would not be any trouble getting volunteers for an event. And of course the Community Service Organization would help also.

we need to build more prisons and keep "people" in jail for many, many, many years. If these "people" are in a gang and they get convicted of robbery - 50 years minimum! If they are in a gang and get convicted of drug trafficking - 75 years minimum! We need to outlaw parole! Everyone must do ALL of the time they are sentenced to!
After that is put in place, we need to start "working on" the gang leadership in Chicago. "Accidents" should happen to any "person" that takes a leadership position in a gang. We know who they are, "things" should just start happening to these "people."

10:08 Can I borrow you copies of Batman comics? Or maybe Punisher?

Its so refreshing to hear from Vigilantes. So many dictatorships have followed that method of getting rid of the bad guys without due process. Its so efficient, soon you get a whole society of "people" just like you:) Of course you would only kill the bad guys, right? Careful there, you might just be becoming what you claim to hate.

How much does canceling the show cost us ?

Anonymous said...

My opinion is that the fireworks were cancelled because of all the boaters who watch them on their boats In the river and the river was high with large currents. Safety issue. However, it's my opinion that they could have used a barge, or searched another area on the riverfront. Very disappointing. The re-scheduled date could also present a problem-too dry of conditions, let's see what happens. Wasn't there a year where the fireworks were delayed a long time to be set off due to barge traffic? Maybe the riverfront shouldn't be the place to set off fireworks. Trains, barges, high river. This is an event that the airport should be used. I wonder how hard it would have been to get the necessary approval to have had the fireworks at the airport the following weekend which would be next weekend? Where is common sense? My opinion, less alcohol would be consumed at this family event if held at a different location. And yes, I myself enjoy a few beers.

Yes the date has been changed for Peru fireworks. It has a strong possibility of being a 2 week display. One week before and possibly one week after the 4th. Forget Aug 31 most have already had there fill. Save the city $20K+!

Anonymous said...

10:21 = the fireworks could happen at the airport. There are rules that have to be followed, but it is allowable.

However, next weekend, there will be stages set up getting ready for Sunday's concert.

Anonymous said...

I bet the city workers will be setting up fences at the airport this week for the concert. Will we get an accurate dollar amount that this concert is costing the taxpayers?

Anonymous said...

the airport is for airplanes. Period, end of story - nothing else should be done at the airport!

In an article in todays News Trib a comment on DUI arrests over the Fourth of July was made by La Salle States Atty Brian Towne that the cancellation of the Peru Fireworks probably contributed to less arrests because the celebration on Peru's Water Street was not held. So in spite of all the contradictions by Peru officials in past years, it appears that other law enforcement officials have taken note.

"La Salle County States Attorney, Brian Towne"

What does the States Attorney give as a reason that once again there were no arrests in Peru for illegal fireworks when they were in abundance for over one week? Next year all calls should be made to State Police District 17 reporting illegal fireworks in Peru. If that fails to get the problem rectified the next call will be to Springfield, Illinois.

Anon 5:17 PM Peru politics, don't you love it. This is why you pay taxes?
