Trick or Treat in Peru Marquette Road and Surrounding Area

Each Halloween, the streets intersecting with  Marquette Rd and on Marquette itself which is a major north south road through the subdivision are congested with cars driven by parents bringing their children to trick or treat in the area. I believe some parents believe this to be a safe area and treats are given out by most home owners living there.

The problem occurs when some cars are parked on one or both sides of the road and children are walking from house  to house and crossing streets while parents are watching them. Others drive along while their children are walking and now add in the normal flow of traffic going north or south.

The city with the help of the police and esda will be handing out flyers encouraging people to park and walk with their children. People living there think this may bring more congestion to the area and you still have kids darting back and forth across the roads while parents sit in their parked cars.

While that part of the city is having issues, other parts of the city see little or no trick or treaters in their neighborhood and people do not even put on porch lights because their are few children in their neighborhood.

What do parents think of the solution?

Solution: parents should take their kids in their subdivision where they reside. Total joke, trick or treat in your own town, village or city for
Crying out loud. Homeowners in the Marquette area should boycott giving candy to all the unknown kids. I know I sound like a Halloween grinch, but really, it's not right that homeowners are passing out candy to kids that live in all surrounding towns. Costing to the tune of $100+.

I live in another town and like to bring my mini-van and 7-8 kids to North Peru for trick or treat. We like the loot and the close proximity of the homes. The solution is to eliminate parking on the street for the night. If you are giving out big treats, post your address and our crew will stop by.

Will there be pickelball games during trick/treat? Will this cause traffic problems?

At about 3:30 have each entrance to that subdivision closed off to residents only. One officer at each entrance (3). Check D.L. For address. Problem solved. If for some reason one who lives there and has a child whose friend lives elsewhere, they themselves go pick friend up to trick or treat . This craziness in that area has been talked about amongst residents and I would say most would feel the same way. Could also have a officer at entrance of baker lake.

11:53, why should those homeowners be responsible for treats for 8 kids who don't live in that subdivision? You should have those 8 at your house for a party and to trick or treat. The first blogger is right on. You're teaching your kids greed 11:53, the more candy the better because houses are close.

Can we park our mini-van in that park? I don't have a drivers license, but have a FOIA card. Can we go trick/treating with my FOIA card instead? Can my 7 kids play that game with those people in shorts hitting a ball with a paddle on TENNIS court? Looks like fun. Hope we don't get those cheap fun size treats like last year. Some of those homes on Marquette Street should pony up with some full size candy bars. My 18 year old can't fill up on the fun size trix bars. Little Mikey, our 2 year old eats 4-5 of those fun candies before he gets dizzy. We hope my sister and her 6 kids will be there this year. They cancelled treat/treat in her town. We better have her get those car seats if the fuzz will be up there this year, hopefully she won't have a parole violation for leaving her town.

I think these problems can be solved without the creation of a police state. It would have been nice had the city required developers to put in sidewalks. That would have made the whole event run smoother and safer.

11:57 REALLY?!? Check points, I.D. checks, close the subdivision off? Well Seig Heil to you!Are you forgetting these are PUBLIC STREETS! What are you going to do if you find a 4 year old there that isn't suppose to be, put them in a concentration camp? Get over it! Put up No Parking signs on both sides of the street and if you don't want them at your door turn off the porch light and do not answer the door. Were you the Charlie Brown of the neighborhood when you were young?

Yep- boycott passing out candy by homeowners. And if you yourself have kids take them elsewhere. The adults are the ones who teach and take their kids up to that subdivision thinking they will get bigger treats such as a full size candybar. Not true though.Stay in your own backyard. Houses are just as close together in the other areas of peru, so the reasoning that people use is houses are close together. Bologna.

About every 15 houses the adults can get a beer if they know the homeowner. Yep, been there done that. Too old now to do it. Fun for all those who participate. Nothing like getting a free beer buzz.

4:17 r u one of those parents who think your kids are going to get the 3x5 white (bag) with a pumpkin on it filled with tootie rolls, smarties and bubble gum in it because of people's ignorance in thinking the wealthier people live up there. Actually, blogger has a good idea about checking addresses if u think about it. How about those trick or treaters who go to the same house 3+ times. Amazing but true.

I don't like it that they start at 5:00. Give people a chance to get home from work for crying out loud! That would reduce the traffic - at least at the beginning of the event.

Cancel it!

What a bunch of scrooges. One night a year won't kill you (unless you try to cross Marquette Rd.) It only takes a couple of hours, so lighten up.
Or you can do like me, turn off the light and go to the gambling boat.

8:59 it only takes a second for a child to run into the street and get by a car. Would you want to be that child or the parents? Or even the driver of the car. These is safety, not Scrooges. Just say'in . 8:59, have you ever been up in that area during trick or treating? VERY SCARY.

To all you people who don't want to give candy to any kid that isn't from your neihborhood turn off your porch light or tell three year old johnnie and jenny no candy for you because your not from this area go back to your neihborhood you are not good enough to be in this neihborhood. Because I'll tell you what, you people complaining about this sure sound like that's what you are saying, that you are better than everyone that isn't from your neihborhood.

I hate everyting!

They give out beer at some homes. Now for sure I will be up there with the rest of the football team. Thanks for the tip

The homeowners up there started all this about 20 years ago trying to outdue everyone else. Free beers for adults and full size candy bars or cash for the kids. That's how it was 15-20 years ago. Maybe its still the same. But the homeowners asked for this!!!

And yes the city is to blame too. They waived the good ole boys development organizers from making them put in sidewalks like is ordinance.

What a relaxing fun filled two hours to have a brewski and see all the costumes and pass out a candy bar. Is there a pre-hour happy-hour? An after-hour party too? Exciting. Always a zoo at Halloween. A bunch of animal costumes. A lot of DEERS. Wonder if the deer spotting ambassador will be out and about. It's a busy time of year for the deer. What's it called? In RUT? What's RUT MEAN?

Anonymous said...

Abolish treat or treat. Take all the money and give it to the pool committee.

Please do not make light of rutting or my sport , deer spotting. I had an incident with a buck one year that I still have nightmares from. All I can say is our official deer spotting uniforms are no longer deer costumes.

Be safe out there kids.

Trick or treating is an excellent way to introduce children to progressive wealth redistribution. By taking the children from the poor part of town and allowing them to beg for treats in a government sponsored event, they learn that the government will always provide and the evil rich people must fork over their hard earned treats or suffer the wrath of a trick. Very educational and practical from my point of view.

I think it's funny that everyone thinks that only the wealthy live "up there."

At least other people outside of our community are now getting a taste of what is happening in this town.

I live in a North portion of Peru, by HyVee. I wish they were doing that up here!! It's UTTER CHAOS!! This issue is NOT about not having kids trick or treat in our neighborhoods! I love to see all the kids dressed up! But it is PACKED with people driving! I cannot believe there hasn't been an accident. Please come trick or treat in our neighborhood, just PARK YOUR CAR AND WALK with your children!

Peru has some nerve to tell out of towners not to trick or treat in Peru
suck it Peru

Nobody is telling out of towners not to trick or treat in peru. But common sense is if you live in a town outside of peru,'why don't you trick or treat in your town. $200 one time on Halloween candy my family spent. Live off Marquette.

Anonymous said...

8:17 you are right. It does take nerve to tell people who do not use common sense or courtesy.

Children should not be bussed around to get the most candy they can. They should go to their own neighborhoods and definitely should not come from other cities.

There should be no travel to another town, unless by foot in shared neighborhoods.

And there also should not be any law to enforce this, no police state. People should show common sense, self respect and courtesy and not view Halloween as a chance for a giant hand out of candy for the year.

If they come , I will give candy with a smile, just as if they lived next door. I will not support police checking licenses for addresses. But I have no problem at all making kids walk for safety and telling their parents or guardians they are teaching a very bad lesson, a lesson of entitlement, of getting the most for free you can.

I came from dirt poor, and my parents taught me not to be greedy, not to take rides to the richer neighborhoods, to say thank you for every piece that was given.

They did not have to teach me to run around and have fun. This is not a Peru only problem. Some families are professional candy collectors. Some tweens hit the same houses over and over. You cannot enforce common sense and courtesy. You can only pray and ask for it.

Let's drive safe and try to let the kids have fun.

Once again the city is approaching this issue in the wrong way. I live in the neighborhood mentioned and love the kids. What they need to do is simple...have a place for the out of neighborhood and out of towners to park and walk the neighborhood with their children. This business of handing out flyers is going to cause more problems and more congestion. Just close Marquette Road and find them a place to park...Baker Lake, Aldi parking lot anywhere but where the kids are. Remember there are no sidewalks up here, and even though the road is wide does not stop kids from darting out into traffic. It is simple and it is only for two hours. Keep the cars off of Marquette Road.

It starts at 5? Not even home from work.

Wow I read alot of uneducated, ignorant comments. This is so sad. Solution- if the people who live in the neighborhood have such a problem with all of it. Turn off your lights and go to a movie. It's only two hours. To the person whom implied that trick or treating in a better area than you live is teaching kids to live off the government......your ignorance astounds me.
