Council Will Not Review Current Sign Ordinance

A few interesting comments on a rather short meeting.

Alderman Perez asked whether the city might want to review their recently passed sign ordinance because of all the political sign violations taking place now. Only Ald. Potthoff and Ald. Radtke responded and it is their choice to leave it as is because of all the time that went into it. This is in spite of the fact that violations are widespread and no enforcement of the ordinance is taking place. You figure that one out.

Ald. Mayszak asked the council to consider reviewing the current manner of the city reimbursing aldermen in total for all of the expenditures while they spend days at the convention of the IML in Chicago. She suggested that we use the amount suggested by the IRS which are must lower.Without a doubt there has been abuse for many many years.

Additionally talked to the candidate for alderman in the Third Ward, Mike Sapienza and he assured me that he is with Ald. Perez on the issue of former Witczak Bros. Garage on 3rd and Putnam and would like to see it cleaned up. Also stated that he is neutral in the Mayoral race and will be willing to work with whomever is elected by the residents of Peru.

I have the right to put any sign I want up in my yard as long as I want as long as I don't impede on someone else's rights. This so called sign ordinance is unconstitutional and the council knows it. You can't put these limits on people on their own property! Get a clue Peru.

Radtke has to go!! He is a follower not a leader and offers no ideas that will move our city forward. He is just taking up a spot on the council. 6 months really then the ordinance needs to go. Taylor chased only a few people that don't stand with the mayor and Biederstedt. Biederstedt has ten signs now within the allotted space I wonder if they will vote him? This big city politics that Harl and Biederstedt are using have to go! We must get rid of their control of city and township this is the year for change.

So what if I put an anti-abortion sign in my front yard that has a picture of a mutilated baby on it? What if I put a sign in my front yard supporting Hitler for president?
ALL TEMPORARY POLITICAL SIGNS SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW! If a candidate for office wants to advertise with signs, they should limit it to commercial bill-boards.

I think the small amount of time the signs are up, all this is a waste of time. people who complain don't have anything to do. Have too much time on their hands. go volunteer to help someone.

Appreciate Mr. Sapienza's neutral mayoral stance but it sure seems to me as I've been reading these blogs over the past year along with the few video meetings I've watched that mayor Harl only works with those who's on his puppet strings. That is the reason HarL has to be voted out of office.
Another question I have for Gary Hylla is if he supported Harls Infrastructure road spending project or if he supported the Hart pay as you go infrastructure project?
I have the answer and can't figure out why Hylla isn't endorsing HarT for mayor when it seems HarT is more fiscally responsible.

What I just cannot understand with regards to our current mayor and some of our aldermen is their inconsistency and their animosity toward certain council members. With regards to the sign ordinance doesn"t alderman Radke know that citizens are aware of the amount of time and money used to establish this so called "sign ordinance". Doesn't he, and several others, realize the reason it was established was because of exactly what is happening today (an over abundance of political signs). What alderman Perez is trying to express is what many citizens are also trying to understand and that is - why establish an ordinance if you're not going to abide by it? Why does it depend upon who breaks the law (ordinance) as to whether it's acceptable or not. This council used our tax dollar to establish this ordinance specifically for this time of year.Abide by it or eliminate it. I just don't understand where they're coming from.

Anon 5:19 Please use any word but change. Four years ago Peru was snow balled with the promise of change now look at what we got.
What person in their right mind would vote to have a ordinance created, vote to have it enforced pay for it and than say they are not going to enforce it all in six months after putting the assistant building inspector on those who are not considered favorable at $30.00/hour. What part of stupid is this that I don't understand.
Is it logical to say we have put too much time in the establishment of this sign ordinance to change it even if there is not going to be enforcement of it as it stands? Would Alderman R. who is opposing Alderman Mayszak explain this thinking?
Think I will ask Travis Nelson he seems to know how to approach this problem so it is not a problem best of all.

Personally I think it is the other way around. It was a waste of time for those involved in the planning of the sign ordinance. It is illogical to create an ordinance, pay the attorney to put in legally together and then decide you don't want it enforced..
They had to know how long the political season is and how signs proliferate each and every election year, so why did they bother? What was their motivation? They sure are looking pretty incompetent right now.

The Mayor of Peru was observed installing one of his own signs in a residents yard, he must be short of help this year. Not surprising is it?

The things I put in my yard are protected by smith & Wesson. Come try and take them!!

I heard from a person that told me Doug biederstedt supported vickrey in last election and not Skoog...now he is back supporting the democrats. What a traitor for our party he and his ten signs have to go from Peru politics. Maybe he will quit if they cut his salary

11:56 please go ahead and shoot anyone who comes to enforce the law. You can kill them then and talk about your rights all the way to prison.

Sign ordinances have been supported as high as the state appellate courts as well as many sound ordinances and nuisance item, visual pollution ordinances, Rec vehicle bans, and home construction permits limitations.
I have not reviewed this one, but it obviously is not being enforced equally.

I am certain your smith and wesson can take out just about anybody. You are very tough. Guns usually make weak people very very tough. But you cannot make up your own laws unless you are going to set up your own little Waco compound. It usually does not work out that well. I wish you the best as you take another human beings life to protect your magic rights.

You would risk a life sentence for a sign in your yard? Irresponsible idiots like the one threatening to shot someone are proof Harl has a chance.

Anonymous said...

Correction... *shoot not "shot". Sorry for the error.

Anonymous said...

Is there a ordinance about shooting a bb gun off on your own property at targets??????

Anonymous said...

Harls chance narrows each day. Especially with us union folk.

Anonymous said...

Target shooting? Wouldn't see that to be a
Problem. Why not!

Anonymous said...

I still say there is more to this bb gun club than meets the eye. There are other plans for that basement. All bb gun shooters needed was a wall and some targets. There are bigger plans for that basement.

I think you are on to something.

11:56 .. I like your style. Exercising 2 constitutional rights in one post. nice!!

There are other plans for the basement, it was discussed at the latest public property committee meeting.

Anon 2:35 Seriously I believe that a ordinance was passed within the last year that you cannot shoot a air rifle in Peru City Limits. T
his would mean BB Guns and include your yard.

7:09 exercising the right of free speech and responsible Gun Ownership? Or exercising the right to threaten and attempt to intimidate the enforcement of rule of law with illegal discharge of firearms using deadly force? I missed that last one in my constitutional law class.

Where was it at?

Here's what we should've received in the mail as a card:

How can you tell "Hurl" is lying? His lips are moving :)

Remember to vote. Just don't vote for "Hurl."

Glad to see that you posted April is child abuse and neglect prevention month.

8:37. This is a political blog. April is not "politician abuse and neglect prevention month". Of course child abuse prevention is of utmost importance, this blog is not intended for that purpose.

Too many of our politicians have reached their levelo of incompetence. Unfortunately, you can't vote Radtke out. like a bad penny, he'll retain the at-large seat. The important thing is to vote Maysak IN.

The city of Peru can't afford a Hart attack after a near fatal Harl attack Vote Baker, or Giordano

It isn't too hard to figure out that election time is around the corner. Things are being done in Peru that haven't been touched in years. Trash is being cleaned out of trenches, bushes are being cut, and clean up is in full swing. While this is good for Peru it's just a shame that things like this only happen around election time and only when there's strong opposition.

Little Baker Park on Marquette Road has not been touched(except for cutting grass) in years, yet today three days before the election dead bushes have been removed, and other bushes trimmed. Oh my why can't it be election time all year long.

I don't think people remember, there were more signs in 2009 than there are now. Whats' the big deal, it only last a couple of weeks. I hope you people have more important things to do than worry about political signs.
