Wal-Mart’s freaking out about the economy. Should the rest of us?

Wal-Mart’s freaking out about the economy. Should the rest of us?
Especially since they are a big source of sales tax revenue for the city.

I have shopped at Super Wal-Mart here in Peru twice. I could give a rats butt what their revenue is or isn't! From glasses, tires , food, oil changes, greenhouses, pharmacy, liquor, salons etc.. that Wal-Mart sells has had a big impact on the small ma and pa businesses. I would rather pay a little extra for items and services from a local family business then pay less which pads the big boy/gals in corporate America! Wal-Mart pays their employees minumum wage to start and only gives them part-time hours. So the big guys keep getting their BIG RAISES AND BONUSES! You think it's bad now, the more small business that go out of business the more welfare recepients there will be. And more will be in all towns! Including Peru. THANK YOU BIG BOX STORES-- ! Think how Olive Garden, Wild Buffalo Wings and Applerbees has hurt the food revenue for family Owned Restraunts in LaSalle and Peru. There are 3 restaurants that are for sale that have been In business for over 10 years and another 1 for sale that has been in business for about 3 years. Very well known rest. And good food.
If it wasn't for the couple of bars and pizza house downtown Peru would be like a ghost town. But, CITY HALL WILL BE WELL LITE!

What 4 restaurants? Would anyone care to answer who knows of four? It was in the paper that Skoogs Steakhouse was for sale (too nice and too big for this area to go to on a regular basic in my opinion), and Monari's for sale. The other two? Not a big Wal-Mart fan(they need a shuttle service in parking lot to get shoppers to the front door from where they park their cars). Shop and eat at locally owned businesses, the big box stores will survive on their own. I bet Wal-Marts CEO'S, CFO'S, COO'S love the Internet shoppers!

My son told me that in the future Wal-Mart will be our only choice because of the very reasons you list above 4:00pm.

I like Wal-Mart. Something for everyone. One place shopping, courtious employees and decent prices. So glad for you that money doesn't matter 4:00 RICH ONE!!! Please don't start about insurance and wages because there are plenty of people who will agree that the unions in this area have screwed the businesses and companies right out of town.

This is 4:00 and let me tell you I'm not rich by all means. There are four people in my family, live in a $125,000 home. I support the American Dream of owning a small business. @5:12- I pray for you that you never come across or have a family member or friend that had or has a small business and it has or eventually will go out of business because of a big box store. And guess what, your taxes will be supporting them because you didn't support them with their business.

Please name the small businesses that the big box store put out of business in this area?

When considering the number of small businesses that the big stores put out of business in this area you must remember that they have now been here for approximately 25 years and that they initially had their biggest impact at their startup.
After a small store closes on account of the inability to compete with a big box store you will find that another small retail store will not start up in replacement because of realizing the reason why the previous store closed. This also eliminates the small store being bought out by a new owner. Individual small store owners depended upon this sellout as a financial supplement for their retirement and this also scares off those with the idea of starting a small business.
Big box stores which are by far the biggest employer of retail sales in our area pay and make enough benefits available to their employees to keep them broke. This is normally true for all of the jobs except for a few in upper management.
