There Will BE a Candidate for Mayor Debate

I found out this evening that a debate will be held April 7 at the Peru Public Library between Mayor Scott Harl, Mike Hart and Donald Baker. It will be moderated by someone coming from McClean County.

Also mark your calendars for March 26 for the WLPO meeting of the candidates. I don't know the time but will find out.

Giordano?

Why isn't Jim Giordano going to be part of this debate?

Sorry he will be a part of the debate. I don't hear his name often and I slipped up. I met him last week and he sounds very interested in the city.

Would the fund raising dept. for the city write to all who have asked for donations to donate back to the city to use the money to pay the person who is coming from McClean County.
Previous comment that those asking the city for donations should come up with ideas to earn the donation is a great idea.
Moderating a debate would have been worthy civic servicefor a organization to earn a donation.
Still waiting for the individual who claims there is a list of organizations that the city can donate to too inform the rest of us on how to obtain it. I truthfully doubt that there is such a list. This is a case of a alderman telling a little white
one because he likes things the way they are. Isn't the overall approved budget line $18,000 this year. Thats alot of money to give out for public relations, campaigning, and plain old back and forth business back scratching. It is no wonder Peru has IVCC, Bob Vickrey and now a third firm sending out cold turkey promotions for city development. This is alot of money for a bakery.

All requests for money from the city go through the Finance Company and they pick and choose what is good and what is not. Ald. Dave Potthoff and Ald. Mike Radtke have the purse strings for requests. The approved ones go to the council.

Radtke with less than two years civic experience is determining what financial decisions should be forwarded to the council. Where has he obtained the experience to justify his sitting in the seat of such power?
Peru is a business of over $35,000,000/year in expenditures and $35,000,000/year in revenue that conducts its business at times without competitive bidding and a high percentage of general fund mentality. Do you as a voter think Peru should appeal to Dixon, Il. for advise?
Who of all the present aldermen has accounting experience and would you recommend to be on this committee rather than Alderman Radtke?

11:19, 7:58 You have a unique and creative way to invent falsehoods about the financial picture of the city of Peru. Can you share with us your candidates financial experience?

I don't believe Radtke asked to be on the Finance committee. It seems that Mayor Harl asked him what committee he was interested in and he replied that any of them would be OK and Mayor Harl put him on the Finance committee.
Before the mayor "reformed" the committees after the election in 2011, each committee had 3 members He reduced the number to 2 and if the 2 didn't agree, it would go to the council.

It would go to the mayor for a decision. He breaks the tie if the two alderman do not agree.

12:42 That's what some of the alderman originally thought and I believe that did happen when it came to a raise for the mayor's secretary. However, after that a similar situation occurred with the public property committee and the mayor decided that the council needed to break that tie. Needless to say the vote was (you got it) 6-2.

According to the news that was reported, the pickleball vote was demanded by Maysak, Perez after they didn't have the ability, skills or tact to change the decision of the Rec. Board to locate pickleball at the current site. Democracy works.

That is only in theory or in Peru because the council with the exception of Perez and Mayszak votes as a bloc. Not too many critical thinkers on this council at present.

Anon 11:23 let us start by producing the list of organizations which the finace chairman told his fellow alderman the finance committee has for direction in granting donations. At one time LaSalle was recognized as "Little Reno" with reason I do hope that Peru does not become known as "Little Dixon" for similar reasons.
Last nights refusal by the Budget Director to discuss a city expenditure with Alderman Perez was a fine example of exactly what both 11:19 and 7:58 are referring to.
I don't know who 11:19 Or 7:58 have as a candidate for the finance committee but the qualified candidate would be the individual who should have no problem beating Radtke in the upcoming elections. She earns a living working at a professional accounting firm. The only probem is how do you take Alderman Sherry Mayszak off the Public Property Committee she is the only representative the people have there.

Ability, skills, and tact do not work with mental midgets, arrogant big fish in small ponds, and individuals who have the sense of personal entitlement burned into them since their mommies first looked at there loaded diapers and praised their poop.

My dear 2:10. Remember what Mayszak said on the last recreation board meeting video. This Pickleball thing is not over yet.

2:10 Feb. 26 Another comment from someone who obviously has no clue with regards to the entire pickleball issue. Nobody (with the exception of maybe the mayor) could have stopped that issue as it was done secretly and illegally (in violation of the OMA). The public was given misinformation and besides that it was constantly revised until bingo - a pickleball court magically appeared. Just as many years ago the tennis court at 28th street park was petitioned to be located at the northeast corner of the park. If you haven't figured it out yet, somehow, someway, it was relocated to within 20 feet of people's backyards. I believe that some of the same people involved in the pickleball fiasco were also involved in the tennis court location. Are you getting the point? It appears that in this town you have to have connections or own a business before those in charge will listen. Sad but true. So, once again please learn the facts before you comment.

Harl would have gotten so much respect and my vote if he would have just gone to listen to Pickleball in their backyards once. It would have shown he listens to all residents, not just a few select ones.

Agree. Respect has to be earned by a person. This is obtained by one in showing respect, in which Mayor Harl did not do to the residents surrounding 28th street park. And I mean all residents.

Regarding the expenditures from city for the BB GUN program. Why were their true costs not disclosed ?Why lie? If true. Also, with money spent on this BB gun program, a small percentage of kids will be involved. Personally the city/police department could have financed a program (similar to what D.A.R.E. ) about drugs. More kids would be involved. Program at schools. For 5th graders or Jr. High. This would have been money well spent, more so then on a BB gun program. My opinion of course.

Good comment and it made me wonder what the drug and alcohol programs are in our community and others nearby. Does anyone know if any of the local PD provide any program in our schools?

Anonymous said...

True costs are not given when a city government does not care what is needed but only what they want. With elections coming up the excuse "We don't have any money" is not being used and all of a sudden city finances have gotten better. Even methods of demolition have improved. Finally after four years everybody and everything have gotten in line and there are only two alderman left to do the Hylla Snow Ball on. Peru you'll never know how thankful you should be to Alderman Mayszak and Alderman Perez.

The D.A.R.E. Program was such a great program. The police department did a fantastic job and the kids throughly enjoyed it. I personally witnessed this. How many families have guns in their house compare to alcohol/prescriptions drugs etc... I would say it's definitely the latter. I'm not against the BB gun club, how many of those kids have signed up have parents who hunt or are police enforcement officers? These parents probably have already taught their children gun safety. A bigger pool of children would have benefited with using money for a drug/alcohol program more so then money spent on a BB club.

Curious as to how much the city donated to Operation Promise Program(drug program)? How much to the BB Gun Program? Does the amount the city donates depend on the person who is head of program?

Anonymous said...

12:10. You nailed it on the head. Vacarro and Harl are golfing buddies, and it's all too apparent how Harl feels about Perez!

Anonymous said...

12:10 As stated by the Newstribune Operation Promise did receive alot of City help. Police, Fire, and more. Should the City donate more because of the Alderman in charge of Operation Promise?

Anonymous said...

1:58 alot of people think the police and fire department volunteered their time and knowledge for operation promise. Also. Don't forget Liberty Fire Company(FUNDRAISING ORGANIZATION FOR THE PERU FIRE DEPARTMENT). Does POLICE DEPARTMENT HAVE A FUNDRAISINING ORGANIZATION ALSO? Did
City of Peru foot the whole bill(financining) for the BB gun program? 1:58, ALDERMAN PEREZ HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT'S BEING DISCUSSED, discussing how much the city gave to bn gun club program vs Operation Promise Program. Your blog seems as if you want to start an argument which would involve Alderman Perez. You just had to put his name in your blog, when you could have left it out. 1:58, keep discussion for what it is!!!!!!!!!!!

Darn tootin that the city should donate the same amount of money to the Operation Promise Program where several hundred kids, teenagers whom benefit from the program unlike a BB gun club. How many are benefitting from the BB gun club. The picture in the news tribune that took up approx. 1/3 of the front page of a boy shooting a BB gun, I thought didn't belong on the front page of our local paper. I advocate gun safety just as much as drug/alcohol programs!

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know if the police department or the BB gun club provides the BB guns and bb's for this program?

Anonymous said...

If I remember correctly that the DARE program was state funded, and cuts were made by the state that cut that program. I also agree that the police department did a fabulous job with DARE. The kids were excited about that program. It was a great way for kids to interact with the police officers.

Greg Vaccaro who is one of the proponents of the BB gun club which also sponsors Oglesby, bought the guns and I suppose the BB's

Greg Vaccaro PLAYS ALL SIDES Democrat, Republican, Independent. Not my type of got to know guy.

Anonymous said...

Isn't Mr. Vaccaro owner of Apple Press which is located in Peru. He had the contract for the city calendar and charged the city over $150.00 for delivery charges. How would someone justify this?

Anonymous said...

Since Anon 7:55 made their comment 1 week and 1 day ago and there has been no reply to the question of $150.00 delivery charge to Peru, Il from Peru, Il not Peru, South America I conclude that someone cannot justify this.
