Topics to watch: Horseshow League to present their wants and needs to the Recreation Board of Peru.

The Fireworks Smokescreen is rearing its ugly head once more. A few weeks ago Ald. Ankiewicz tried to get his on way at the council meeting when the July 3 fireworks display contract was scheduled for a vote and he wanted it sent back to committee. The council wisely overruled and voted to award the contract that evening.
What do you see on the Recreation Board agends but a review of the contract, exactly what Ankiewicz wanted. For some reason Ald. Ankiewicz believes his wants and needs overrule what is right and legal in this city. So it looks since he is on the Public Property Committee, he took it upon himself to direct the Recreation Board to review the contract. How much time because of Ald. Ankiewicz do we have to waste reviewing a contract which was legally taken care of by a council vote. What in the heck is Bob getting from Melrose that is so important that he keeps throwing up this 20 to 25 minute fireworks display from committee to council to committee. It is time for him to realize his wants are not the wants of this city.

Mayor and council where are you? Why are you allowing this to be put back up for discussion? You yourself voted to accept Extreme. What could there possibly be left to discuss? This discussion has been going on for months on end. It was originally supposed to be solved in September. Here it is Feb. and it's still an issue. Somebody needs to take control!

He probably found out that the company they hired had a malfunction in Ottawa last year. Looks like something that smells worse than the river at that time of year. Why did the City of Peru have such a big discussion on this new company with ties to a few city officials? Ald. Ankiewicz may be on to something more than a few sparklers.

My question would be who is getting what from the new company. Such a big push from a few of the alderpeople about bringing in this new company. Same amount of money spent, it makes you wonder who is behind this new pyro group? And why?

The "butcher" just can't take defeat with any amount of dignity or class. It appears he is going to try to subvert and tamper with a decision that has been rendered by the full city council.
What a political hack this guy is!
Thank goodness he will soon be replaced.

This was a project that went out for bids and numerous pyro companies submitted them. Melrose did not win Extreme Pyro did and it was all done legally and fairly. Let it rest as it is only 20-30 minutes of entertainment for some in the Illinois Valley. Let it go and if next year you want someone else, make that decision when the bids come in. And next year, please get bids on the fireworks you want and not what you can get for $20,000. That is not too bright.

Why do you people want to keep the old company? Or better yet, why is alderman Ankiewicz so insistent on retaining Melrose? Extreme won the bid fair and square. It seems to me that there has been a lot of controversy with regards to the Park and Rec Board decisions lately (i.e. pickle ball, fire works, parks in poor shape, etc.)

I heard Gordman's might be going into the old K-Mary building and the mall may be getting an Aeropostle. Any body else here the rumors?

I was not familiar with those 2 stores but did look them up and looks like both are located at Grand Prairie. It would be nice but it seems the Peru Mall anchors are not even doing that well and would be hard to imagine large chains like that moving in especially with the competition they would have here.

Interesting article regarding city managers on the editorial page in tonight's paper.

Princeton style Concert for a Cause.

PRINCETON — Another winter weekend fundraiser for charity is a sell-out in Princeton.
A week after an outpouring of support for a Prairie Arts benefit gala, a Dueling Pianos fundraiser for Princeton Park District will have a full house this Saturday, Princeton parks executive director Elaine Russell said.
“The tickets sold out last week,” she said.
Just how much it will bring in is yet to be determined. Among about 30 items up for bid at auction are purses, a upscale coffee maker, big-screen television, John Deere cart, gift certificates, works by local artists. Russell said proceeds from the dinner, Dueling Pianos act by Dan Heth and Michael McMahon and auction will be used to enhance Alexander Pool.
The park board would like to purchase some large, kite-like canvas items to shade the baby pool area. In addition, the goal is to add a slide as well as pool toys.

The last city council video posted is from 1-23-13. Today is 2-9-13. Does anyone but the present city officials consider this as success. What are they hiding?
Someone had best open up Pandoras Box before April 9th election.
Peru cannot survive another four years of the same as the last four. It is going in the same direction as the Titanic!

I THINK ITS TIME THAT THE BUTCHER SHUTS UP ON THE FIREWORKS. HE IS NOT GOING TO GET HIS KICKBACK THIS YEAR. SO TAKE IT LIKE A MAN AND QUIT YOUR CRYING. YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BE AN ALDERMAN, YOU ARE TOO DISHONEST.

Forget the fireworks! $20,000 a year going up in smoke. Spend that money on something permanent for the youth of Peru. There are enough towns surrounding Peru with fireworks that it is not a inconvenience to travel to see them. Peru officials do not know how to bid, they open the door with $20,000 instead of asking the company for a presentation and than inquiring what the cost will be.
They have completely avoided the bartering system forever in the field of fireworks, water treatment and engineering. Of course who barters when you have all the fishing trips out of the country, high class living at the IML convention and beyond, plus back room poppers for private investing. BARTER - FORGET THE FIREWORKS!

Would the $20,000 from fireworks and the $25,000 the city lost on Concert for a Cause be a nice start for a splash pad?
Start! It comes close to paying for the whole thing.

Recent rumor is that downtown Peru is going to lose another business since the city is supposed to change who they buy their fireworks from. How would this harm a downtown Peru business?

Anonymous said...

The fireworks he sells at the deli are his kickback for getting them the contract. Now that someone else has the contract he won't get his thousands of dollars worth of free fireworks .

Anonymous said...

Selling many fireworks is illegal in Illinois. Does anyone have hard evidence that an elected official is selling dangerous fireworks in the city of Peru? That is a real allegation. Rumor does very little.

Anonymous said...

If, and I say if, they are being sold out of the backroom of the deli they must be illegal, otherwise he could sell them upfront, right?

Why else would Alderman A risk going against a city council vote and looking like a complete fool if he doesn't have something to personally gain from it?

Lois, your comments on Princeton having fund raisers made me think that would be a good idea for the school districts instead of trying to force the taxpayers to cough up more money. Oh, but that would take a lot of work...everyone who benefits from that extra tax money should volunteer so the tax would not be necessary.
