Can Don Baker Be Elected Again?

Heard a petition was taken out? Is it true? Would you vote for him? Harl, Hart or former Mayor Baker?

Right now my vote is with Mike Hart. If ex-mayor Baker would get elected and couldn't fulfill his full term who would complete his term? Would he appoint someone? This might be something to think about should this scenario play out!!!

Hypothetical legalities should be answered by those with professional knowledge. These are questions which were brought up and answered in the last election.
Fondly remembering his Father and Uncles who were with us forever he comes from a strong stock, mentally and physically.

Anonymous said...

If that's true 11:31 could you please post the answers? I don't recall what they are or were.

Anonymous said...

11:31 AM - Oh brother! It's getting pretty deep.
Apparently Don couldn't get any takers with his offer of $25K in "blood money" to run for mayor as his proxy. I hope he intends to have EMS on staff at his side at all times with "De-Fib" fired up and ready. He should also have someone nearby to remind him who he is and what he's doing. I got it. Who better to do that now than the same minion "Gold-Digger" that used to manipulate Don?
Bring Judy back too! Why not? It'll be just like old times.

For al who constantly complain of this blog. Was Don Baker really that bad? and can we afford another 4 years of Scott Harl?

Anonymous said...

If the preciding Mayor was to be replaced he would not have the power to replace himself, but instead the council would vote among themselves for a new mayor. If the term was to be less than 2years the elected alderman would fulfill the entire time. If the remaining time was to be for more than 2 years there would be a election for mayor at the next city council election. The mayor elect would serve a 2 year term until the next mayors election.

Anonymous said...

People are getting STUPID! If more than 1 person runs against HARL, he WILL get re-elected. THE UNION VOTE WILL PUT HIM BACK IN! Pick 1 person -- whoever -- and GET RID OF HIM!

I heard Ozzy wants Baker to run so he can be fire chief and drive the new pickup truck around and waste gas. Whatever happened to that truck?

Peru Town Forum said...

and who is Ozzy?

Anonymous said...

maybe joe oscepinski? but he is a retired 25 yr vet of the fire dept- so not quite sure why that was even said or ever posted on here

When a accusation is made of $25,000 in "blood money" the accusser should be fair to all and inform them of the amount which has been collected by the present mayor in his war chest. Much of this amount has been collected from present city officials, administative personnel, corporations which have been doing work for the city without bidding, and a very selective group of shovel ready organizers who have been recipients of millions of dollars of street work.
What will become of this war chest if the incumbent loses the Mayors race?
To feel that that it is unlikely that Mayor Harl could be beaten in the upcoming election is a huge mistake as the mood of the voter is in favor of "CHANGE".
A "CHANGE" which both opponents would make and the incumbent has not achieved satisfactorily.

The "Daily Disappointment" just broke the story that Baker IS running. His quote: “I didn’t like the way things are going, the way it is now,” It's gonna be a wild ride.

Anonymous said...

If Baker got re-elected hopefully he would appoint fire engineer Gary Eccles back to being fire chief, as he ran a fair and great fire department when he were chief. Those were the days that firemen actually volunteered(no pay) for extra things without being paid. But, did get paid for
fire call they showed up for. Look at the turnover of fireman since Gary Eccles hasn't been fire chief. Makes one wonder why.?

Anonymous said...

You can bet TEST will for sure work on baker's campaign/website like they did before, they need him to become mayor again to seal the city contract

Anonymous said...

If it is true that Baker is running, then Hart should be smart and drop out so we can be sure that Reverend Harl is beaten. Today was a big dinner at the 150 and I would think that Harl was there rallying the troops for his campaign.

Peru Town Forum said...

1:04PM

He should not drop out and when positioned against the others will very well look and act like the best person for the job of mayor of Peru.

Anonymous said...

Baker is too old - he was falling asleep at council meetings when he was mayor yeesh just stay retired for godsakes

Anonymous said...

We don't need baker again - we don't need the good ole boys club back, we need to get away from that favortism way of thinking!!

Anonymous said...

All I can see is Baker, is crazy trying to run again. What an EGO, He can hardly walk, let alone try to run a city. Furthermore he doesn't have Judy, to tell him whats going on.
Hes running because he doesn't like whats going on now. Mayor Baker you never saw so many streets get paved at one time. Its too bad you didn't do more than 1 block at a time. I think Scott Harl is doing a good job, so I hope he keeps it up. There will always be some complainers, but they are never satisfied, unless they are finding fault with something.

Anonymous said...

Anon 1:38 Harl has been in hibernation for the full term of his ofice. He has not accomplishd any of his campaign promises.
Everything done during the Harl administration was supposed to be on the up and up and all open jobs would be published. How many people have been hired since Harl has become mayor and how many jobs were advertised in the paper?

Anonymous said...

The only change the present mayor made in his tenure has been friendships!

Lois: There is a very interesting open forum letter in the news tribune regarding the newly revised intersection. I think it's quite interesting and would be something your readers might agree with and would like to see.

Peru Town Forum said...

Thank you, it has been posted

Anonymous said...

Harl won the last election by having 2 opponents! Don't be a fool and think it can't happen again. Union votes will end up putting him back in even if his non-union supporters are not backing him. If Hart does not drop out for this time around, the writing is on the wall and Harl will be re-elected. Baker will take a lot of votes away from Hart (maybe even get more) but it will not be enough to beat Harl if it's not 1 on 1.

Linda said...

I have to say that the few times I've had to use this intersection it has not been a safe time. When headed west on 38th street and wanting to turn left onto Venture
Drive be very, very careful as those heading east seem to forget you don't have to stop and pull out right in front of you. Also, be careful if someone is in front of you because many still think they have to stop and you could rear end them. People still drive around the pylons, run the stop signs, and disobey all the instructions. I just don't think this is the answer and hopefully no one gets hurt before we realize that,

Once again the self appointed official Ambassador of Deer Spotting is to be called into closed session to discuss the construction of a obstacle called a fence erected on Marquette Road. From all reports it has been determined that the double beaked Ambassador of Prickle Ball has been locked out of court with the rest of his jesters and now wants to fence in all living creatures until the bong, bong, bong of early spring takes place at a Sunset as promised by B.S. excuse me I meant B.A.

Anonymous said...

The smart thing for Baker to do is endorse Hart.

Anonymous said...

What happens if Baker would win and he falls ill or worse and can't finish out his term, who steps up as mayor?

Anonymous said...

OMG. THE SELF APPOINTED AMBASSADOR OF DEER SPOTTING IS BACK. DEER HUNTING SEASON IS OVER FOR NOW BUT DEER CAN BE STILL SPOTTED. S-A-A-D-S-----This blog topic is going to bust our guts, now that you've returned to give us your professional opinions with a sense of humor. I better take my false teeth out so they don't fall out when laughing after reading your blogs.

Anonymous said...

5:04 That is also a thought that makes a lot of sense. I am just saying Harl will not be beat if there are 2 opponents. Hart and Baker should work together as 1 and have only 1 opponent.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Pinochio will run for mayor, you know with his nose and all.

Think about Harls campaign funds so far disclosed and who has donated. And if any of those who donated will donate to Bakers war chest. This will show true friends, etc..., will be very interesting so to speak.

5:38 A of DS here. I have not posted anywhere above. Recall I retired at the end of the season in a post far below. The issue of the next mayor is one that I am not going to poke fun at, because it is too serious.
When Spring comes, I am confident I will have a new spot to watch for deer, as I will be invited along with other city dignitaries to a place called Circuit Court. Sounds exciting, like a fancy tennis court or something. But that would be crazy, all the tennis courts around here get used by tennis players and are in neighborhoods, so we wouldn't slap our sticks loudly there. Most likely Circuit Court will be the name of the new open space north of the mall when the Mayor finally drives out the pesky businesses from the old deer crossings up north of the mall. Think of the new demolition projects the city will have! I believe the French word for progress is Les Rubble.

The ambassador of prickle ball is able to do anything he pleases and that includes putting a snow fence around his entire yard. What will he think of next? Maybe he should stretch a piece of fence across his driveway going the other way, then he can play his favorite game twenty feet from his house.

its a sad state of affairs if the residents of Peru have to hang their hat on an 84 year old guy thinking he is the only resident in the entire city who can run the business of Peru. It is the old cronies who all got rich off of his tenure as mayor who cannot let go. The city of Peru needs to think about the future and not the past. If they vote in Baker the city of Peru will go backwards. Keep this in mind. When Baker passes you will not be able to prop him up in a chair and pretend he is still the Mayor. Move on Peru. If all these business people think Harl is doing such a bad job, why are they not running for office or putting up a quality candidate. Maybe things in Peru are not as bad as this blog says it is.

Anonymous said...

It is the elderly who will vote for Baker -- and there are a lot of them around here.

Anonymous said...

No one in their right mind would vote an 84yr old President into office to run our country, why would you vote someine that old into a local office?

Anonymous said...

10:45 What makes a quality candidate in your mind? What made Harl or Baker quality candidates? I definitely think Mike Hart would make a quality candidate.

Anonymous said...

Much of Anon 10:45 comment is distasteful and embarassing without any positive ideas for the City of Peru or any other government body.
What chronological age does this blogger believe a individuals political life should be limited to. Personally I perfer representation from all age groups .
In 1776 a group of men of all ages put together a significant paper which we live by and it is working out well - The Constitution. Cannot remember anyone being considered to be blackballed on account of age among this group.
Political ideas should be judged on issues.

My grandfather lived until he was 98 years old. He was in a wheelchair for the last 4 years of his life. And I will tell you that he would have had no problems at his ripe old age in being a mayor of a city. Who gives a flying flukes nest the age of a person to perform a responsibility such as a mayor. Mr Baker did an ok job as mayor of Peru in my opinion. He would be a great advisor to Hart because of his years of service and experience to Peru and its citizens. I think of Betty White at her age, she's one of the hardest workers in Hollywood. Perfect case in point age doesn' matter. Remember they say todays 50 is the new 40. Don't forget Barbra Walters age- she's still going like she's 30. Age. Weight, Height of a person shouldn't matter.

YOU GO DON BAKER, GET YOUR WAR CHEST LOADED UP (campaign funds), AND TAKE'EM ON LIKE GRANT TOOK RICHMOND! OR HELP LOAD UP HART'S CHEST FOR HIS CAMPAIGN. BAKER AND HART NEED TO HAVE A SECRET MEETING AND DECIDED WHO IS REALLY GOING TO BE ON THAT APRIL BALLOT.

Anonymous said...

Barbara Walters going on thirty. What, in dog years?

Hey, Agism is a bad thing, but realistically he had his chance and at 84 age is a realistic concern. If he is in good health with a high energy level, he might well be physically capable of being the mayor. But the odds he will be able to embrace OMA rules and bring Peru into this century when he never did in the past are pretty low. His age is not the issue, his experience is. And the experience of those many years cannot and should not be forgotten.

You can't go back to a dictatorship the first time democracy lets you down. Change comes slowly, always has, but it is worth it. First the city had a parent who made all the decisions for you, then it voted in a partying child with a deep sense of entitlement . Now its time to grow up. Like the top of the blog says, the city Is what it is because its citizens are what they are. They will get it right this time. Keep the faith. You gotta have Hart, er, I mean Heart.

A of DS will you be available to slap sticks loudly for a few brief moments to help Rudolph guide his sleigh on Christmas Eve for Santa. In case of inclement weather those of us who are really good stick slappers will need additional volunteers with stick slapping experience.
Also I have designated the Peru Prickle Ball Court as a resting area on Xmas Eve and would appreciate lighting and all gates to be unlocked so Donner, Cupid and Vixen and the rest of the good old boys have a site to perform their nightly constitution.

Anonymous said...

5:43 Are you saying that Santa is real in Peru? That explains why so many adults still act like children and hold their hand out for money.
I had no idea you took it so seriously.
Even though I have retired, I will do my best and use all my leverage as the Ambassador of Deer Spotting to fulfill your requests, but I need to warn you. Whenever I approach my "deer" friends, as I like to call the members of the administration, and try to discuss using that pinselball court, they just clam up , turn around and go to the bathroom. I actually got four of them in there at once after the council meeting, and they stayed in there for three hours. Two of them managed to squirm out the window , but the ones I cornered said they would have to refer me to the double secret probation files in the police chiefs office if I needed to use the paddleball court to store our whacksticks. All this fuss over puddleball seems strange to a serious deer spotter, but I will see if they allow you to use it as soon as I can find the chief. He has been in disguise as a township trustee, undercover probably, but when I see him I will ask him. He has a couple of my whack sticks I need to get back anyway. Wonder why he needs them, since he is not a Spotter. There are not many of us.

Happy Holidays,

Who knew we have so many Mensa Association members commenting on this blog.
Wow, some of these comments are really smart!
I don't understand why the really smart people on this blog are having absolutely "ZERO" impact on their local governments.

No influence on any policy decisions.

No blog sponsored candidates for any public office in Peru, city or Township. No serious candidate would ever align themselves with this futile bitch-fest.

No meaningful communication with any elected officials due to the "anonymous" factor. Why would any elected official attempt an exchange of ideas with an anonymous name-calling jerk?

The time has come for the great majority of you people to realize that your unreasonable comments and petty criticisms mean absolutely "nothing" to anyone except the malcontents who live in this little "bubble of hatred" you have created for yourselves.

You're totally delusional if you think you will ever accomplish anything useful or constructive on this blog. Face it!

Anonymous said...

8:42 AM - Are you Mrs. Harl? If not, you are deffinately a Harl supporter. The truth is like salt in a wound to some people.

Anonymous said...

I definitely would not agree with no influence on policy decisions.

Sometimes, the effect almost seems to be a comical entrenchment by the administration, risking much more than iThe particular ssue is worth.

The concerts, pickleball are two such examples. No administration would risk so much just to please a few and refuse to back down.

Videotaping of council meetings comes about shortly after tapes begin appearing here. Odd timing, huh?

I always am amazed by the fight club mentality of this area, where an elected official claims they cannot answer a blog question , not on its merit, but on it's anonymity? What do you think the reason for that might be? Could it be the very real retribution possibility?

No one of any intelligence is suggesting the attorney or the mayor get on this blog and respond to the posts where people misspell insults and scream in CAPS, but there also in NOTHING stopping any candidate or elected official from plainly stating their side on very real and well formulated questions.

No candidate needs to ALIGN themselves with the blog, since it reflects different opinions. They can state their positions if they wish, answer questions, etc. If people respond by attacking their families or bringing up innuendo instead of fact, call Lois on it. I will be the first one there supporting you.

You complain that the blog is a whine festival of like minded people, but in large part it is because the opposition to many of theses posts is no minded, never countering with anything except the chorus saying everyone would be better if they stopped complaining and did something. That gets old too. Complaining is doing something, asking for answers is doing something.

Read chicken soup for the soul if you want feel good parables, but expecting everyone to take all the crap lying down won't cut it. This isn't parochial school in the 50s, and the people want some justice and some damn answers.

Anonymous said...

I ask myself why would anybody suggest to let issues that have been discussed on this blog to dropped. Especially the process in which they were enacted by the city without the consideration of all people(neighbors), etc.... Peru is coming upon an election , so, people who vote will be taking past and present issues into account in which the manner they were handles to determine who they will vote for. Under no circumstances to sweep under the rug. A concerned taxpayer should be appreciative of this blog site. I don't agree with everything that's blogged but I do appreciate peoples viewpoints and respect their opinions. Freedom of speech and opinions is one a right for everyone. Either one likes or they don't. Live with it. Hopefully in the next few months the candidates will campaign upon these issues and discuss how they would have handled them if they were elected. Meaning all issues in the last 3 1/2+ years.

Anon 12:41 are you serious? Don Baker does not need to split the votes. The order in which the 2012
