To All Garage Sale People - Weekends Are OK

Just a short time back we had a discussion of garage sale signs that were being removed without notice and people were upset and understandably so as there was not a city announcement made, it just happened. Enforcement of this was given to the newly hired code officer because our building inspector did not have time.

Just last week while driving through the downtown area of Peru, I noticed a sign for a garage sale that was taped to a light post on 4th and while I usually don't pay any attention to garage sale signs because how else are people going to get the attention of those wanting to shop the sales, I thought this one was inappropriate and I know the area we consider "down town" Peru is raunchy looking at best, this just added to the mess.

Trying to clarify the signage issue last night, I asked that particular question about that particular sign and was told by the Mayor that we have no one to enforce this ordinance on weekends. The code officer is done for the year and the police will not enforce the ordinance because the Mayor said they are too busy doing other things.

So after the big eruption of a few weeks ago, I guess if you are planning a sale yet this year before spring, put your signs anywhere anytime because there will be no enforcement. Weekends are a for sure and most likely anytime because I doubt that our bldg inspector was going about town removing them during the week.

I guess we could now call this the WEEKEND ARE OK ORDINANCE.

Foreign Fire Fighter Fund - 2% Board

This is a rather complicated and dull read as all codes are but scan through it and some things will jump out at you. I am just learning about this funding to the fire department. I think that the funding to the city has changed and it is money sent directly to the Liberty Fire Department which is only a fund raising not for profit even though they are not a part of the city technically.

Peru Halloween Parade

Today the Halloween parade was held in Peru but no Fire Truck in the parade. Doesn't this ask the question why? They were not at a fire call and evidently no one had volunteered time to travel in the parade. Along that line, did you get your request from Liberty Fire today. I did.

News Tribune - News - Local - Peru pool fundraising to kick up a notch after grant denied

Anonymous said... Good morning Lois, just read in the News Trib that the Peru Pool Committee is going to apply for a 501(3)c, Non Profit Corporation. Please make this a heading, so the citizens can comment on this move. I for one, would like to see the money that has been raised put towards a splash pads in one of the parks for the kids by the start of next summer. No need to start a corporation to do that.

Not All City Councils are the Same

Until last night, I only remember one other time when we went to a city council meeting that was not in Peru and that was in La Salle many years ago. So last night a friend and I decided to visit the La Salle city council meeting because I was told by another friend that the meetings in La Salle and the meetings in Peru were totally different. She was right and it is probably because of people with different personalities holding the same jobs that we have in Peru but managing them in a totally different manner from the Mayor and the dept. heads down to their aldermen. All the people present were welcomed by Mayor Grove and the meeting moved along without any glitches and all seemed knowledgable about their respective departments. We easily found answers to questions we had and I would like to thank those that we talked to for their graciousness in giving us the information that we wanted.

News Tribune - News - Local - Focus on SV tourism could bring economic benefits

This is the type of urban renewal that is going on in Spring Valley, La Salle and Princeton, will it affect business in Peru since we are a city of only Big Box Stores. Are we missing out because most of our Mom and Pop stores are gone?

More Trouble in River City also Known as Peru

Let's Talk Fireworks Again

On Saturday, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Jazz'n the Street event on First Street in La Salle for several hours. I had gone in years past but never had stayed for the fireworks but this year we did. We were sitting at a table very near to the wine and beer tasting tent located at First and Gooding St and the fireworks were shot off from Canal Street about a short block away. So for about 30 minutes some of the best fireworks I have ever seen were going off over the buildings and sometimes directly over our heads. No ash, no debris. After all the complaints and worry about Baker Lake Park, here we were literally beneath the shower of fireworks and nothing was raining down on us. Was it the company doing the fireworks? Was it the manner in which it was done? There has to be an answer. I don't even pretend to understand why it went off without a hitch on First Street in La Salle and Peru has not even attempted to use Baker and people were crying "The sky is going to fall"

Lions Donate $5000 for Trees in Peru

At tonights city council meeting, the Peru Lions Club donated $5000 for trees in city parks as part of a nationwide Lions campaign to plant more trees. At this time Ald. Ankiewicz of the committee of public buildings and parks had no comment as where they might be planted.

Also Gary Grabowski was appointed to the Planning Commission with the approval of the full council. This is a vacancy created by the resignation of Howard Flahaut who spent many years on this commission and a letter was read from the family with the announcement.

I understood previously that all openings to any committee or commission would be announced publicly and that letters of interest would then be accepted and the Mayor would then make his choice. I did ask the Mayor tonight where he made the public announcement and he only answered by saying he had a list and he chose from that list. How that list was accumulated and maintained was not explained to my satisfaction or to the satisfaction of several others in attendance.

AND THEY MADE MONEY FOR THE CITY

Whats Going on in Peru Signs Are Being Removed Willy Nilly?

It seems that all of a sudden the city has decided to randomly enforce an old ordinance regarding signs that can be temporarily posted such as garage sales, ice cream socials, charity events and remove them without notifying the interested parties that they are in violation. Our building inspector appears to have decided they he will decide what signs stay up and which ones come down. Should he have consulted with the council or perhaps put a warning in the local paper that starting on Day ? forward NO signs would be allowed unless he decided they were OK? I thought the new Code Officer was to be under the department of SPW, Gary Bleck and all of a sudden he is enforcing the rules designated by Frank Taylor. Will someone in Peru please make sense of this situation?

Are We Now Allowing Cars to Park on the Grass of Baker Lake?

Anonymous said...

This weekend a function was held at Baker Lake. Once again cars were allowed to pull into the Park and park on the grass. I don't recall this permission being neither asked for nor granted at a council meeting. Today, a path or roadway appears to have developed where the cars exited the Park. There were 2 rows of cars parked all the way to the nursing home. Could an ordinary citizen park their car on the grass while visiting the Park? This situation seems to be happening more and more in all our parks. This was never allowed before.
